A Daily Perspective

Give us this day our daily bread (Matthew 6:11, ESV).

I have a quirky thing that I do before I start each day. Yes, I most definitely have my abiding time with Jesus. That's my lifeline—but I wouldn't call that quirky. Each morning, I clean my glasses with soap and water and then wipe them with a cloth that is made just for glasses. Some might call it OCD behavior, but I prefer to call it having a fresh perspective.

I've worn glasses since I was about two years old, so you would think I'd be totally okay with glasses that are smudged or water-splattered. Not so! The rain—and now the snow—persist in annoying me as I have to constantly fish my glass's cloth out of my purse to clean them.

Growing up, I also wanted other people to have clean glasses. Several students at our school used to come into English class with glasses that were more opaque than they were clear. It drove me crazy! I'd grab my cleaning cloth and ask for permission to clean them. They would give me big smiles when they put their glasses back on their faces, like, "Oh, this is where I am!"

This physical routine, this habit, of putting spotless glasses on every morning is a reminder that I have a fresh, new day in front of me. I think of cleaning my glasses each morning as washing off the old (sin, worries, and stresses of life) of yesterday and having a clear frame of reference for a new day that God has given me.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:2, NIV).
