Geography "Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that?" Michael PAlin

Geography Leader: Mrs J Groves

At St Botolph's CE Academy...We are Geographers.

Intent

Our intent is for every child to be a geographer. To learn with and about geographical key concepts, practices and applications. Our curriculum starts in EYFS and is progressive and accessible to all pupils, through our inclusive commitment to scaffolding content and supporting all pupils to thrive.

We seek to create a life-long love of the subject, through teaching our children about our locality and other diverse places, people and resources.

Through the key areas of Earth systems, the Environment, Places and Spaces, our desire is to provide our children with a sense of awe and wonder about the world they live in.

Through these areas our children learn about the correlation between the natural and human features of environments, as well as the lasting impact of our physical and human processes on the world we live in

Our curriculum is designed to provide our children with a rich subject specific bank of language that they can use to describe, question and discuss the world, as well as their place in it.

Underpinned by our unique Christian character, our pupils are encouraged to recognise that they have a voice and to use it confidently to debate topics that they feel passionate about, for example, deforestation or renewable energy.

Our curriculum is designed to be progressive and ambitious, giving children the opportunity to build on their geographical skills year on year. Children learn to interpret a range of sources, communicate geographical information, understand direction and location, draw and plot maps, represent features of the environment and use and interpret a variety of different maps.

Implementation

As part of the Geography curriculum at St Botolph's we embrace the essential learning opportunities that field work brings. Children are given regular opportunities to plan, carry out and present their geographical findings in a range of areas.

Based upon the National Curriculum and the individual needs of our children, we have created a Geography progression map, which sets out the objectives taught in each year group. Geography is taught as part of our two-year cycle for each age phase. We alternate our Geography and History topics ensuring that our children receive a well rounded teaching of the humanities subjects throughout the year.

Our whole school oracy focus underpins our vocabulary-rich Geography curriculum. Teachers use questioning, and provide opportunities for discussion and investigation to support the development of vocabulary, which is explicitly taught and modelled by teachers in every lesson. Key geographical knowledge and language (such as, the name and location of continents, countries, capital cities and oceans) is revisited frequently, to make learning memorable, relevant and easy to retrieve.

Impact

We assess pupils' knowledge in geography after each unit. This is then used to inform future teaching and allows future teaching to build on prior knowledge, while addressing misconceptions.

The impact of our Geography curriculum is measured in a variety of ways: questioning during lesson time, marking children’s written work, listening to child-led discussion, interviewing pupils across the school about their learning, book looks and using images/videos of children’s practical learning.

By end of the Geography curriculum at St Botolph's, our children will be well rounded geographers, who are prepared for their future learning at Key Stage Three.
