So, how do you become an apprentice?
Basic steps to becoming an apprentice
- Research apprenticeships that interest you to determine which is the best fit.
- Determine if you meet the minimum requirements. These usually include high school diploma or equivalent, and a drivers license. However, each apprenticeship is different and may have requirements regarding math, reading, physical ability, and drug screening, etc.
- Develop a resume, gather proof of any previous training, and the contact information for both personal and professional references.
- Follow the application instructions found on the apprenticeship website or other correspondence.
- Prepare for your potential interview and required testing.
- Interview for the apprenticeship.
Basics of an apprenticeship
- Once selected, you will begin and complete classroom training that is required before being placed with an employer.
- You will be paid a lower wage while in the apprenticeship program.
- You are expected to complete all apprenticeship required classes.
- You are also expected to complete the required number of supervised on the job hours.
- Once successfully completed you will earn Journeyman status with an increased pay scale and you will be able to work without direct supervision.
- Additional training will be required to reach Master status with an increased pay scale and you will then have the ability to train other apprentices and journeymen.
Note: All apprenticeships are different in pay scales, requirements, expectations, length of on the job training, and amount of classroom training. Please research each apprenticeship program so that you have a thorough understanding of what is required of you.
