Instructional Design Project: The Ultimate Toolkit for Incoming UIUC Students

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Background Context & Learner Analysis

Many college students are unaware of the diverse resources available to them. This usually leads to students dropping out due to feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, stressed, and sometimes socially isolated. These challenges can negatively impact a student's academic performance, college experience, and career prospects, increasing the risk of the student not returning or dropping out.

To address this critical issue, we have developed a comprehensive electronic guidebook designed to inform current and incoming students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) about the wealth of available resources. This guide will be electronically distributed to all students via email and supplement college orientations for incoming and transfer students. Our goal is to empower students with the knowledge they need to connect with peers, access vital mental health and disability services, develop essential life skills to manage stress and time effectively, and ultimately enhance their overall college experience to increase their likelihood of graduating.

Upon completion of orientation and review of the guidebook, students can confidently identify and access a wide range of UIUC resources, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is made up of 16 colleges that provide over 150 undergraduate programs and over 100 graduate and professional fields of study. There are seven cultural centers available to the entire campus community, as well as four museums, galleries, and collections. A total of 651 buildings are actively owned by the university and inside the campus master plan boundary. There are 16 student resource centers available on campus, including career services, a counseling center, tutoring support, disability resources, education services, international student services, and many more. In addition, there are over 1,000 student groups for on-campus and online students.

Learner Analysis

The target audience for the resource guidebook consists of incoming transfer or undergraduate students who have adequate reading comprehension, possess strong visual literacy skills, and most importantly, are motivated to succeed. Since these students have already met admission requirements, they are expected to engage with college-level materials effectively. However, their familiarity with university resources varies significantly, highlighting the need for structured guidance.

Most students are new to the university environment, and their prior knowledge about available programs and support services is limited. Orientation allows students to familiarize themselves with important resources that align with their specific needs and interests. Although students are motivated and interested in connecting with peers and the university, the large amount of information shared during orientation can be overwhelming.

Learning Units Overview

Upon completion of the training modules, students will be able to (1) access the One.Illinois.edu website and join many clubs, organizations, register for events and chat with other students using the chat feature and connecting with peers.

(2) Confidently navigate and utilize UIUC's academic support resources, including tutoring, libraries, test prep, and other services to increase their chances of academic success, leading to graduation and/or program completion.

(3) Develop and implement effective time management skills to balance academic and social commitments, establishing clear academic goals.

(4) Access and utilize university mental health services, disability services, and related accommodation resources.

Instructional Package for Module/Unit 1: Networking, groups, clubs, and organizations

OneIllinois is a system that allows students to connect with other students, departments and student organizations. Students may also become a student organization officer. As an officer, you can manage your organization profile, register your organization, register for events and make payment requests, etc. Faculty and staff can participate in student events that are being hosted by the student organization.

To join OneIllinois, go to One.Illinios.edu and get started with your profile! Below is a step by step process to walk you through how to create your account. Once you have access, recommendations will be made for you as to which organizations and clubs you can join. Currently, there are 7 departments and programs, 909 orange student organizations, 120 blue student organizations, all with lifetime memberships! The difference between the orange and blue student organizations depends on the registration cycle of the student organization. Currently, there are 27 group categories to choose from and 10 affiliations. In total, there are 1069 groups and affiliations.

ACCESSING LEARNING

The purpose of this assessment is to determine whether students can access the OneIllinois website and be able to reach out to other students, expand their network and join an event, club or sports team. The assessment is a criterion-referenced model. Students will be assessed on where they can find organizations, clubs, activities to join

By the end of this training module, undergraduate students and transfer students will be able to access the One.Illinois.edu website and join many clubs, organizations, register for events and chat with other students using the chat feature. They will have access to the student directory to locate other students with similar interests, ethnic backgrounds and other spoken languages.

Instructional Strategy

The instructional strategy of Module/Unit 1 is structured to be simple and easy to follow using multimedia tools such as Google Slides and videos. The instructor will introduce themselves and go over the Google slides which describes how students will establish their OneIllinois account. The slides will take them step by step will easy to follow instructions.

The second part of the instructional strategy includes a video on how to use the OneIllinois webpage. The webpage contains a wealth of information for students to access. Including a student directory, chat feature, how to join clubs, organizations, sports teams, activities and register for upcoming events. There is a small assessment at the end to encourage students to expand their social experience.

Evaluation

Formative evaluation is used in all of the Modules/Units and includes a needs assessment, learner analysis, blueprint and an assessment. This detailed process demonstrates the quality and effectiveness of the instruction.

Upon completion of Orientation, Instructional Designers will interact and engage with the new students and transfer students while utilizing The Ultimate Guidebook for Incoming UIUC Students to make sure they can navigate and find the resources they are looking for.
