What's On?

Week 9 | Term 2 | 15 June 2026 | Mullumbimby High School Newsletter

Principal's Message

Week 9 sees us moving towards the end of term (11 weeks), but the pace is not easing up. After a few days away last week at the State Principal’s conference in Sydney, it was great to get back to Mullumbimby High and the Byron Shire. There is nothing like time away to make you grateful for where you are.

Green Team efforts rewarded

I wanted to recognise the wonderful work of our Student Green Team who with the assistance of Kellie Gough in Inclusive Education show great effort each week in facilitating recycling around the school and for their recent fundraiser for World Environment Day. The money raised will go towards environmental projects within the school. As part of the day, Year 9 Textiles engaged in a ‘Trashion Parade’ and designed, created and paraded their ‘Trashtastic’ designs. They did a great job of raising awareness and of slaying on the catwalk!

Youth Voices Project

A smaller team of students took the lead in the next step of the Youth Voices Project, “Pathways to Action” in week 7 and have some fantastic updates to share on where to next. In week 10, these students will be taking over the principal’s report space to get the message out to our wider community and will be sharing their progress at the school Assembly. The key messages that they want to share are what we found out in the Connect and Thrive Event about what young people in Mullumbimby want and how we get there.

Hands-On Learning

Our Hands-On Learning Project has kicked off and is moving from strength to strength. The Hands-On precinct is slowly developing around our containers and students are developing some great skills to support them not just towards the workforce but to become very engaged and useful people within our community in a range of student-led projects focused on construction, sustainability, environmental stewardship and biodiversity. The precinct will serve as a foundation for future initiatives, creating meaningful learning opportunities while fostering a strong sense of ownership, pride and connection within the school community.

Year 12

The very busy time for Year 12 HSC students is about to begin in earnest. On 1st July (Wednesday Week 11) we will be holding interviews for Year 12 students and their parents to discuss pathways and transition to their next post-secondary school destination. This could be the workforce, an apprenticeship, university or TAFE. IT is a great opportunity for those students who are just going to take a gap year and work it out to engage with our careers team as well. There are so many opportunities and different pathways for students to take that a little guidance can really help with the navigation.

Positive Behaviour Focus is wearing safe footwear at school

This week our Positive Behaviour Focus is on safe footwear. We really want to make sure our students are safe at school and fully enclosed shoes are the way to do this. At the risk of sounding like a fashion snob, Uggs are for home and not for school. Leave your Uggs, Crocs, slides and thongs at home as well as your high heels and platforms. Flat, fully enclosed shoes are the appropriate option for school.

NAIDOC preparation

Our Muggi Culture Team is gearing up for a big celebration this NAIDOC week. 2026 marks 50 Years of Deadly, 50 Years of NAIDOC and 20 Years of our cultural programs including the ‘Deadly Dancers’ here at Mullumbimby High School. Our dancers will perform at our Partner Primary Schools Ceremonies and will showcase their skills and talents at our NAIDOC Assembly on Friday 24 July.

Preparing for NAIDOC

Have a knockout and noteworthy week 9.

Sensitive Topics during PDHPE Classes

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is one of the key learning areas for students in Year 7 to 10. Our school’s PDHPE program aims to provide opportunities for students to learn about, and practice ways of, adopting and maintaining a healthy, productive and active life. It also involves students learning through movement experiences that are both challenging and enjoyable, and improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence in a variety of contexts. It promotes the value of physical activity in their lives. Our school’s PDHPE program provides the opportunity for students to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health and wellbeing of themselves and others, now and in the future. These issues include physical activity, mental health, drug use, road safety, sexuality and sexual health, nutrition, respectful relationships, personal safety, diversity, gender roles and discrimination. Some of the content of the program deals with sensitive issues. The school recognises this by teaching about these issues within the context of a developmentally appropriate program and by providing information to you about the program. The PDHPE program aims to encourage students to make informed decisions about their lifestyle taking into account the values of the family, culture and religion to which they belong. The school program will be implemented in a manner that supports the role of parents and caregivers, and reflects the ethos of the school community. An overview of some of the content of the PDHPE program that may be considered sensitive is provided below.

Should you wish to discuss any aspect of the course or would like more information, please contact Lachlan McKenzie on telephone 6684 2600 at the school.

Reminder of school procedures: Leaving Early, Arriving Late or Messages

GOING AWAY 5 DAYS OR MORE? A reminder to our school community that the NSW DET requires that parents arrange holiday DURING school vacations. If your family holiday is during school time, you will need to inform the School Principal in advance and submit a permission to leave from school. An application for leave should be provided at least two weeks prior to departure. Ask our office for an “Application for Leave” BEFORE the holiday. ABSENT, LATE OR EARLY?  If your child is not at school, let us know they are safe. We will let you know they are not at school with an SMS message if we have not heard from you. COMING IN LATE?  School starts every day at 8:50am for all students. If students arrive after that time and miss CARE (roll call), please let the school know why they are late or provide them with a note. Students need to sign in at Student Services Office as soon as they arrive on the premises. LEAVING EARLY? Only legitimate one-off appointments will be approved by the principal. A note or a phone call should be made to Student Services before 9:30am and a leave pass will be processed. MESSAGES TO STUDENTS? Please call before 2pm. Only URGENT messages will be passed on during class time. We ask that all arrangements regarding after school activities be discussed with your student BEFORE school to avoid stress and distraction.

As you are already aware, NSW high schools have banned the use of mobile phones. Please support our school and do not contact your child directly during the day as it is a distraction and would put them in breach of school rules. Our office is happy to pass on messages.

Careers News

Year 10 Work Experience, Week 2, Term 3

Students that are not attending the Year 10 Snow Trip, are encouraged to engage in work experience.  The information pack with the required Student Placement Record form has been given to students.  Many students are starting to explore options, and it is a great way to try a career/industry that they may not have thought about.  It is important to note that students cannot be in paid work during the week, unless they are completing a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship, and are only covered with insurance with the work experience approved by the school.  For students attending school, there will be a supervised class.  Should you have any questions, please contact Leanne Clarkson, Careers Adviser.

For all careers questions, come and speak with Ms Clarkson at school or visit Mullumbimby High School careers website - https://mullumbimbycareers.com/
