The Importance of the Target Market

A good marketing professional will monitor trends in the target market to identify changes in customer demographics such as age, gender, race, marital status, education level, type of occupation, number of children, income, geographical region, etc.. These changes can have a negative impact on a company if not taken into consideration when developing a marketing mix.

The 4 P's of the Marketing Mix

Product

  • What is the product?
  • Is it tangible or intangible?
  • What needs or wants does it meet?
  • Why would people buy the product?

Price

  • How much does the product cost to make or provide?
  • Are there other costs (i.e., rent, storage, utilities)?
  • How much are customers willing to pay?
  • Who is the customer?

Promotion

Any activities that persuade the customers to purchase the product. For example sales, coupons, discounts, contests, gifts, etc.

Place

  • Where will the product be sold?
  • Where will your advertisements be placed?
  • Where will the service be provided?
Your turn...

Thinking of the target market you described above develop a marketing mix for the circus.

  1. Product- How could you update what the circus offers to meet the needs of the target market? How could it be changed to meet the challenges presented in the video?
  2. Price- How much can your target market afford or are willing to pay?
  3. Promotion- What activities would you suggest to reach the target market and persuade them to attend?
  4. Place- Where will the circus be held, are there any options for people who can’t attend in person?
  5. Present your marketing mix to a family member and ask them if it would persuade them to attend the circus.
“Something about the circus stirs their souls, and they ache for it when it is absent.” ― Erin Morgenstern
