Students Learn about Louis Riel & Métis Awareness Week

Frank J. Ney students were learning about Louis Riel and about the Métis people during Métis Awareness Week. Mid Island Métis President Joy Bremner and Member Lloyd Hogue shared stories and items from Métis traditions and cultures.

Regular Board Meeting

At the Regular Board meeting on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, the Board awarded KMBR Architects Planners Inc. the development of the Project Definition Report (PDR) of Ladysmith Intermediate School seismic mitigation project and the PDR of the Ladysmith Primary School expansion project.

The Board also approved the amendments to Policy 2.18 - Trustee Remuneration and Professional Development Expenses subject to public consultation which ends on December 22, 2023. Information on how you can provide feedback can be found on the Community Engagement webpage.

The Board also received a presentation from the Nanaimo Area Land Trust (NALT) about their School Water Stewards Program. View the entire agenda here.

Class Play acts as Learning Tool

Students in the French Immersion Communication Orale 11 class from NDSS read the play Zone by French Canadian author Marcel Dubé, focusing on all of the big ideas for this course such as learning about linguistic variations, interpreting a text based on life experience, the message and intention of the writer, and using the voice as a powerful tool. Students also practiced their pronunciation, non-verbal elements and group work to pull off a fantastic class play.

Nanaimo Toy Drive

The Great Nanaimo Toy Drive coordinates the donation and distribution of toys to families in need during the holiday season for children (newborn to 17 years old) who live in Nanaimo between Lantzville and Cedar. Families wishing to take advantage of this program must pre-register online or by phone this year.

Registration for the 2023 Great Nanaimo Toy Drive began November 13th and runs until December 3rd. Families can register here or call 778-787-1803 Tuesday - Saturday.
