New Discoveries

To begin our computing lesson, we looked at the different parts of a computer. The children started by sharing what they already knew and worked in pairs to record their ideas. We then explored key technology words together, and the children had a go at placing them around the classroom where they thought they belonged, matching them to different pieces of technology. Using iPad's, the children then drew examples of technology they could find around the room, showing a great understanding of what these devices are and how they’re used.

We then looked at inputs and outputs and talked about how technology often has a computer inside that’s programmed to tell it what to do. We introduced the idea of algorithms, a set of instructions and the children followed clear steps to explore how they work. Building on this, they designed their own robots, making sure to include inputs that would help their robot carry out specific tasks. We saw lots of great creativity. Finally, we went on a Safi technology hunt around the school, and the children absolutely loved spotting different types of technology in action. From interactive boards to automatic doors, they were excited to point out all the devices they recognised.

During our Forest School session, the children discovered a lovely area in the woods with a small stream running through it. They were excited to play "poo sticks," They each choose a stick and dropped it into the water to see which would float along the stream the fastest.

We also went on a woodland hunt, searching for animal carvings hidden throughout the forest. The children followed a set of instructions and clues to help them find each one, showing fantastic problem-solving skills along the way!
