Women's Soccer Ties Bates, Finishes Season on Upswing
In their final match of the 2023 season, the Colby Women's Soccer team fought to a draw with the Bobcats of Bates College.
Both defenses were impenetrable throughout the opening half, and even the first 25 minutes of the second 45. Abigail Jarvi put Colby on the board with under 20 minutes to play off a feed from Madison Genser. Bates, however, tallied in the final minute to earn the hard fought draw. Jarvi's goal was her third in the last six games, and the Mules ended the season with only one loss over that span.
Colby finished the season 5-6-4.
Men's Soccer Blanks Bobcats 2-0
In their final match of the 2023 season, the Colby Men's Soccer team triumphed over their neighbors from Bates 2-0.
In the 19th minute Eduardo Casanova blew past the Bates defense netting his 5th goal of the season and giving Colby a 1-0 advantage heading into the halftime break. The Mules kept the Bobcats offense at bay, holding onto the one goal lead until Lleyton Bristow found the back of the net for his first goal of the season, assisted by Nicholas Donnelly. Donnelly ended the season tied for the team lead in goals and points.
The shutout was the sixth of the year for goalkeeper Brendan McCarthy.
Colby ends their season with a 6-6-2 record.
Field Hockey Falls Just Short of #8 Bates in OT
With the tenacity that characterized the 2023 Colby Field Hockey team, it took more than regulation for the eighth-ranked Bates Bobcats to top the Mules. Colby fell Tuesday night in overtime 2-0 to close out the 2023 campaign.
After Bates jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter, the Mules chipped away with goals by Pernilla Shaw (assisted by Molly Mitchell) and Casey Winslow to draw within one. Shaw scored her second of the match with less than three minutes to play off a feed from Charlotte Epker, sending the match into overtime. Bates converted early in the extra frame to earn the victory. Shaw ended the year leading the Mules with eight goals, now totaling 20 goals over her first three seasons.
The Field Hockey team ended the season with a 4-11 record.
