The Painted Island with Kaitlyn Miller

AUGUST 17 - 23, 2025

Little Cranberry Island, Maine

The Painted Island is a weeklong summer art retreat that will explore pleinair painting with local artist and former island resident, Kaitlyn Miller. Experience the restorative nature of the island, enjoy exceptionally crafted handmade meals, connect with fellow artists and community and the natural beauty of this very special place that many of us call home, if even for a week: Little Cranberry Island (otherwise known as Islesford).

The beauty of the summer Maine island landscape awaits, from rocky shores to sandy beaches, island gardens, and sweeping views overlooking the ocean and across the bay to the mountains of Acadia National Park.

All experience levels welcome!

$1850

The week includes:

Art workshops lead by Kaitlyn Miller

Hosting and coordination lead by Marie Locke

Each day will start with a morning session of pleinair painting on location with Kaitlyn followed by an afternoon of free time to continue painting and developing your work. The week will include an afternoon field trip to Great Cranberry Island and visits to local events and activities.

Students will practice observing and translating the natural beauty of their surroundings on the island. Kaitlyn will cover the basics of acrylic painting, color mixing and encourage your unique personal expression through the use of color, form and composition.

Daily sumptuous meals consisting of organic local produce, fresh seafood, poultry, with vegetarian options, lovingly prepared by Marie and Nancy.

Six nights lodging at Eagle Point with double occupancy, single rooms available at an additional cost.

Transportation to the island and the mainland plus parking.

Time to enjoy a small friendly island - great for walking and biking.

You are welcome to work in the media of your choice. Kaitlyn will be teaching from and working with acrylic paint. A suggested materials list will be provided.

Kaitlyn Miller received her BFA in Ceramics from Maine College of Art and then moved to Little Cranberry Island, Maine where she lived and worked year round as a studio potter for 15 years. With an enduring love for color and the island, she began translating the beauty of her surroundings into paintings in 2019. She now lives in Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island with her son, where she enjoys connecting with the greater creative community. She travels weekly to Islesford to teach art to the students at the Cranberry Isles School and is grateful to stay connected and contribute to the island community in this way. Working at times as both a potter from her home studio and as a pleinair painter, Kaitlyn is compelled to capture the limitless beauty and ever changing light and life of the islands.

Marie Locke :: Coordinator/Host

Four of my favorite ingredients for life are art, making people happy, cooking for friends and Little Cranberry Island. The island art retreats are the highlight of my summer. I get to work with wonderful teachers, dream up new menus, spend a week on my favorite island, cook fabulous food and bring artists together. It’s the kind of summer joy that needs sharing. The kind I experienced as a kid on the island.

Nancy Wagner :: Co-Host

I am a maker of things. I make paintings and pies and dresses and dinners and any number of things that suit my fancy or catches my eye. Nothing makes me happier than sharing these things with friends and like minded people. Add in a beautiful dwelling on an island in Maine in the summer, cooking and laughing in a kitchen while art making is percolating around me and I say that life doesn't get much better than that.
