Prep School Newsletter Friday 6 June 2025

Our Year 6 pupils took to the roads (safely!) for their first Bikeability adventure – a fantastic introduction to cycling skills, road safety and coordination. Well done, Year 6! Meanwhile, Reception had a brilliant day out at Blackberry Farm. Despite the cloudy skies, they made the most of every muddy puddle and animal encounter. We rounded off the week with a lovely assembly led by Chaplain Katie, who shared a message about kindness. Add all the fantastic classroom learning to the mix, and it’s been a week full of variety and energy. A great start to June.

From clean water to creative waste – it’s Science Week at KC Prep- let’s recycle!

We’re looking forward to an exciting Science Week beginning on Monday 16 June. The week will be packed with hands-on activities, fascinating experiments, and themed workshops—including a special visit from WaterAid, helping us explore the science behind clean water and global sustainability.

We’ll be busy at school experimenting with all sorts of materials to discover what floats best—and what sinks. Exciting prizes await our top sailors, so every contribution could make a splash! Please remember to send in any items from your recycling bin that might help us build the winning boat!

Home Clothes Day Friday 20 June!

Pupils are invited to swap their uniforms for their favourite home clothes in support of a special re/up-cycling clothing drive led by Chaplain Katie. We’re collecting good quality, pre-loved clothing to donate to our wonderful Textile Department for creative projects as well as to local charities in need.

Simply pop your donations in a bag clearly marked with your House name—every bag earns house points, so get sorting and give your clothes a second life for a great cause! Chaplain Katie

What happened in School this week?

Forest Explorers

Our topic this term is Summer—even if the weather hasn’t quite caught up yet! We’ve been exploring different types of holidays and the various forms of transport people use to travel. We've also been learning about foods that grow in warmer climates, and had great fun experimenting with citrus fruit printing!

Reception

The children in Reception had a wonderful time at Blackberry farm this week. Our morning began with a tour of the farm when the farmer took us to meet and feed lots of animals. There were goats, pigs, sheep, cows, llamas and alpacas, ponies, a horse, kids and donkeys. The children enjoyed feeding the animals -some of them were greedier and friendlier than others! After feeding the animals, the children went on a tractor ride around the farm, which was very bumpy but lots of fun. Then it was time to meeting some small animals, two rabbits, some guinea pigs, a tortoise and two rats. The children enjoyed learning about each of the animals, stroking and holding some of them. After lunch, the children had the chance to play on the play equipment before our journey back to school.

Year 1

Year 1 have had lots of fun this week! We have done lots of work on position and direction in maths and can confidently describe where things are in relation to each other; we have also done lots of practise of using left and right. Mr. Sullivan tried to catch us out by getting us to face a different direction, but we were too clever! We also enjoyed looking at ordinal numbers. We have started our new topic on Under the Sea and our first task was locating the oceans we find around the world. We will be looking at which creatures live where as well as thinking about how we can help protect them and their ocean habitats.

Next week we are looking forward to our Forest School Day on Friday 13 June and the children can come in their own clothes (which they don't mind getting muddy). Please remember a coat, a sun hat and wellies too.

Year 2

This week, Year 2 began an exciting new Design and Technology project — to design and build a wind-powered raft that will take part in a race! The children explored which materials sink or float, discovering that lighter objects made from wood or plastic tend to float, while heavier objects made from metal usually sink. With this knowledge in mind, they began thinking carefully about which materials they might use for their own raft designs. We can't wait to see their creative ideas take shape and come to life!

Year 3

Year 3 have been learning all about polygons in maths. They have enjoyed doing some geometry where they have had to be really accurate in their drawings of 2D shapes using a ruler, and thinking about right angles, parallel and perpendicular lines. They were really pleased with their finished results!

Year 4

In science, Year 4 have been exploring the topic of electricity. In a recent hands-on lesson, they experimented with building their own circuits using switches, wires, batteries, and bulbs. The pupils enjoyed the challenge of creating complete circuits and were thrilled to see their bulbs light up as a result of their efforts.

Year 5

Following half term, Year Five have launched themselves, full throttle into the last few weeks of the academic year. African art accompanied African drumming, translations and reflections moved into maths, mystery writing thrilled in English and coastal erosion washed into humanities. In pairs, the children undertook a filming project to show their understanding of cave, arch, stack and stump formation. Keeping them from munching the 'headland' was quite a challenge!

Year 6

In science Year 6 were investigating insulators and conductors. As an added challenge, they programmed BBC Microbits to light up an LED matrix and play a sound if a material was a conductor. They attached crocodile clips to the bottom of the Microbit and attached materials in between them to test. The class were surprised to find that humans were good conductors.

Bikeability Programme 2025

Our Year 6 pupils recently took part in the Bikeability programme, gaining valuable skills to help them cycle safely and confidently on the road. Through a series of practical sessions, they learned how to check their bikes, signal clearly, navigate junctions, and ride with awareness in real traffic environments. The experience not only boosted their cycling ability but also encouraged independence, responsibility, and a strong sense of road safety – all while having a great time outdoors!

‘It was fun riding the junctions with cars.’ Emilia
‘I like having fun and learning new things at the same time.’ Lyra,
‘Ever since I did Bikeability, I feel safer on my bike.’ Solenne
‘It was really fun and exciting, especially the games.’ Cyra

Year 1 and Year 2 Gardening Club

In Year 1 and Year 2 Gardening Club this week we did a bit of harvesting and foraging. The children harvested the broad beans, which were sown back in October last year. They then went around the school grounds looking for fragrant elderflowers. All of which was taken to the wonderful chef's in our school kitchen, who have promised us some culinary delights from the harvest. We can't wait!
