The Art of Parenting: Nurturing Young Minds for a Bright Future
Parenting today is a shared and evolving journey, deeply rooted in the duty (Dharma) of raising children with values, wisdom, and cultural heritage. It involves nurturing virtues, ethics, and life lessons to shape children into responsible, compassionate individuals. Parenthood is a unique responsibility with no formal training, little prior knowledge, and immense significance, as it directly impacts the people, we cherish most i.e our children.
This blog delves into shift from traditional to contemporary approaches, and practical do's and don'ts to help parents raise happy, well-rounded, and confident children in todayâs dynamic world.

Other factors that influence parenting
Â
1. The Impact of Technology on Parenting Â
Technology has transformed parenting in profound ways. While it provides educational tools, entertainment, and communication, it also presents challenges like screen addiction, cyberbullying, and reduced face-to-face interactions. Parents must find a balance by setting screen-time limits, monitoring online activity, and encouraging offline engagement.
2. The Role of Culture in Parenting
Culture plays a significant role in shaping parenting practices. In collectivist societies like India, China, and Japan, respect for elders and family values are emphasized. In contrast, Western societies often prioritize individuality and self-expression. Understanding cultural influences helps parents adapt strategies that align with their values while fostering healthy development.
3. Raising Emotionally Intelligent Children
Emotional intelligence (EQ) is crucial for a child's success and well-being. Parents can nurture EQ by:
- Teaching self-awareness and empathy.
- Encouraging emotional expression and problem-solving.
- Modelling healthy emotional responses.
- Providing a secure and supportive environment.
4. The Importance of Positive Discipline
Discipline should teach rather than punish. Effective discipline strategies include:
- Setting clear expectations and explaining consequences.
- Using time-outs and logical consequences instead of physical punishment.
- Reinforcing positive behaviour through praise and rewards.
- Maintaining consistency in rules and expectations.
Question: Why do obedient kids at times struggle in life?
Answer: Parenting styles significantly influence a childâs self-perception and interactions with the world. Strict, rule-bound parenting often limits a childâs ability to express their opinions, fostering self-doubt and low confidence. Children raised with a 'fear of failure' mindset may struggle with decision-making, conflict, and self-expression as adults. They may hesitate to share ideas, fearing mistakes and seeking external validation over trusting their instincts. These parents should practice the following-Â
- Path to Resilience:Â Awareness is keyâbalanced parenting styles, like authoritative parenting, emphasize warmth, guidance, and open communication.
- Positive Outcomes:Â By encouraging autonomy and self-expression, children develop confidence, resilience, and emotional strength that last into adulthood.
- Hopeful Takeaway:Â A shift toward nurturing yet structured approaches can empower children to thrive in all areas of life.
Â
Question:Â How can working parents build strong bonds with their kids?
Answer: Working parents often feel guilty about not spending enough time with their children or missing special moments. However, building strong bonds isnât about the quantity of time but the quality of interactions. Simple, intentional moments like bedtime routines, breakfast chats, or weekend activities can create meaningful connections. Small, consistent actions, such as sharing laughs or having undistracted conversations, help foster secure bonds. Flexibility and understanding are keyâitâs not about being perfect but being present in ways that work for your family. By carving out manageable moments, parents can create a loving, supportive environment where children feel valued and secure. Parenting is a journey of growth, love, and adaptability, where the goal is to create a nurturing environment that helps children thrive. Successful parenting isnât about being perfectâitâs about being present and understanding a childâs unique needs while encouraging their independence. Your children will become who you are; so be who you want them to be. Blog written by- Surmeet Kaur Faculty SJS
Raising Curious Thinkers: Nurturing Inquiry
I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.
- Albert Einstine
Curiosity is the foundation of meaningful learning. When children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, and think independently, learning becomes deeper and more joyful. In an ever-changing world, nurturing curiosity helps students develop skills that go beyond textbooksâcritical thinking, creativity, communication, and confidence. Inquiry-based learning places students at the center of the learning process. Instead of only memorizing facts, children are guided to observe, question, discuss, and reflect. For example, when students are asked questions such as âWhat do you think will happen ifâŚ?â, âWhy do you think this happened?â, or âCan you explain your thinking?â, they begin to explore concepts rather than simply accept answers. Activities like group discussions, role plays, hands-on tasks, and open-ended questioning encourage learners to think independently and confidently. In Mathematics, curiosity supports logical reasoning and problem-solving. When students are encouraged to explain how they arrived at an answer, they develop a deeper understanding of concepts. For instance, while solving addition or subtraction problems, children may use number lines, beads, drawings, or mental strategies. Asking questions such as âIs there another way to solve this?â or âWhy does this method work?â strengthens conceptual clarity. Mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities, helping students reflect and improve. Similarly, EVS promotes curiosity by connecting classroom learning with real-life experiences. Observing plants in the school garden, discussing seasonal changes, identifying sources of water in the neighbourhood, or talking about community helpers encourages children to ask meaningful questions. Activities such as nature walks, simple experiments, picture discussions, and small projects help students develop awareness, responsibility, and care for their environment. In Language learning, curiosity plays a vital role in developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. When students are encouraged to predict story endings, ask questions about characters, or relate stories to their own experiences, language learning becomes engaging and meaningful. Activities like storytelling, picture reading, word games, role play, and creative writing prompts such as âImagine you are the main characterâ or âWhat happens next?â help children express their thoughts confidently, improve vocabulary, and enhance comprehension. The importance of nurturing curious thinkers lies in preparing students for lifelong learning. Curious learners are confident, adaptable, and open to new ideas. They see challenges as opportunities and mistakes as valuable learning experiences. Teachers play a crucial role by creating a safe and encouraging classroom environment where every question is valued. By appreciating effort, encouraging dialogue, and fostering inquiry across subjects, teachers help students develop a positive attitude towards learning. âArticle by Priyanka Rawat Faculty SJS
