News from Mrs. Ferguson

This month staff and students have been working on improving their self-management skills. A person with strong self-management skills is able to manage their stress, control impulses, and set and reach goals. Self-management can be broken down into three subcategories: emotional regulation, physical regulation, and self-discipline. A student that is emotionally regulated knows how to respond to and care for themselves when feeling big emotions. Physical regulation can be described as understanding what is comfortable for your body and feeling in control of it. Finally, self-discipline allows students to put forth their best effort. Students who are able to self-regulate have greater self-esteem and are able to contribute to a high-quality classroom environment.

You can encourage your students to self-manage by talking with them about recognizing when they feel a big emotion and knowing what will make them feel better. For example, going for a walk, doodling, or writing in a journal. Goal setting and discussing what is within and outside of their control, both at home and school, can also be effective.

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized by staff for their self-management skills this month:

K: Alex McCarty, Desmond Smith

1st: Amelia Bowland

4th: Bryson Ratajczak, Calliope Wagner, Karli Bennett

5th: Ruth Waskevich

Adams PYP Luminary Peace Walk

Throughout the week of November 13 members of Adams Elementary fifth grade leadership team, under the guidance of Mrs. Stacie Capua, Mrs. Jenna Dulude and Mr. Ernest Seebeck, planned activities for World Kindness Week. The week’s culminating event was a Luminary Peace Walk with lanterns decorated by the students at Adams Elementary. When designing the luminary lanterns, students were encouraged to reflect on what peace meant to them and how they would be able to share kindness with those around them. Students decorated the lanterns in art and added quotes and drawings about peace and kindness for all to enjoy.

In addition to creating luminary lanterns, Mrs. Dulude worked with students to create a video in which students shared positive quotes to spread the message of peace and kindness. Students enjoyed seeing their peers on screen and hearing the inspirational messages while walking the lantern lit path. The result was a powerful experience that allowed students and staff to reflect on the events of World Kindness Week.

Parent Information Committee

Please consider joining MPS Administration for our 2023-2024 Parent Information Committee sessions. The sessions cover current relevant topics in education that are of importance to the MPS mission.

Administrators will present information and have an open discussion on the topic with parents to gather input to assist us in our plan of work.

All meetings are from 12-1 pm at the MPS Administration Center, 600 E. Carpenter St., and will be recorded for viewing on the MPS website.

Stay tuned to the Communique for upcoming PIC session dates and topics!

Lost and Found

Unclaimed items are donated at the end of each semester.

Students should check the lost and found periodically. We have accumulated many misplaced items such as jackets, water bottles, lunch boxes, and other personal belongings. Please label your child's belongings to help us quickly return them to their owners.

Community Programs

We want to be sure that our families are aware of the community programs available to those needing assistance. At this time, the following programs are available to Adams students/families:

The Midland County Emergency Food Pantry Backpack Buddies Program is available again this school year. Contact the office at 923-6037 if you would like to receive the food backpack.

Reporting Absences Through ParentVUE

Parents/Guardians can report student(s) absent via ParentVUE. This feature appears as a blue button titled "Report Absences" on the app's main page or website.

  • Parents/guardians can report absences for a single day or multiple days.
  • Report each student individually. Do not enter additional students in the notes section.
  • For each absence reported, parents/guardians must provide a detailed note explaining the reason. If you report your student as sick, please list the symptoms your student is experiencing. The note will help school attendance staff select the correct attendance code.
  • If you have a legal or medical document, please upload it with the absence, or provide it to the school attendance staff upon your student's return. Parents/guardians can still call to report an absence at 989-923-6037.
