Spring is Here!
The chill of the winter air is warming and new life is beginning to emerge. As the springtime storms bring a promise of abundance and life, birds are building their nests and flowers are beginning to bloom. Another key marker of the arrival of spring is the arrival of humpback whales in Southeast Alaska. I just returned from an absolutely awesome week in Sitka, Alaska where I had the privilege of witnessing dozens of humpback whales bubble-net feeding on large schools of herring. Pictured above is one if the many feeding displays I was lucky enough to capture! The humpback whales have just returned from their migration to warmer waters in the winter months. During their winter migration they do not eat. All of their energy is spent on breeding, birthing calves, and raising their young. Needless to say, when they return to their Spring/Summer feeding grounds, they are VERY hungry! Humpback whales are baleen whales and they time there arrival in Southeast Alaska with the herring spawn. The waters are filled with millions of spawning herring and the humpback whales take full advantage. They merge into groups to make the most of the abundant feeding opportunity by practicing bubble-net feeding. Once a school of herring is located, the whales dive below the school and swim in a circle while blowing bubbles. This forms a 'net' around the fish and disorients them causing them to swim in a tight ball. The whales then swim up to the surface, trapping the ball of fish against the surface of the water. Now it is time to feast! The whales swim to the surface in tandem and open their huge mouths to capture as many herring as they can! When they close their mouths their baleen allows them to filter out the salt water and swallow the many, many fish they just caught. Using these feeding methods which have been mastered and passed down by previous generations, the whales are able to feast on up to 2,000 pounds of fish per day!

Earth Day-2025 Our Power, Our Planet!
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd every year. But, let's make every day Earth Day!
There’s just this one planet Earth, and it’s on all of us to safeguard a future with a livable climate, healthy communities and thriving nature—during Earth Month, on Earth Day and every day. Let’s put our heads, hands and hearts together and take action to preserve and protect the natural world for generations to come.
For 55 years, Earth Day has led the world in raising awareness and taking action on critically important environmental issues. We advocate for the health of the planet, for our air, oceans, soil, ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. On April 22nd, 2025, Earth Day will turn 55, with 192 countries and over one billion people around the globe expected to participate. This demonstrates how the diverse Earth Day movement remains as dedicated today as it was back in 1970 to bringing everyone together for a better future.
Why should we care?
It seems obvious...there is only one Planet Earth! We should all want to protect and preserve our home.
So...what can we do?
Please visit https://www.nature.org and https://www.earthday.org to find grassroots efforts near you! There are so many ways to get involved. Even small differences make a big impact!

Photo Fact!
What the f-stop?
F-stop is the term used to denote aperture measurements on your camera. The aperture controls the amount of light that enters the camera lens, and it’s measured in f-stops. Not only does your f-stop setting, or f-number, help you get a proper exposure, it also helps establish the look and feel of your photo by determining the depth of field.
Think of the f-stop/aperture, as the pupil of your eye. The more open the pupil is, the more light gets in. The human eye equivalent of f-stop is f/8.3 in bright conditions and f/2 in dark conditions. This photo here, "The Web We Weave" was taken at f/2.8. Therefore, the camera's pupil was wide open allowing a lot of light to reach the camera's sensor. This wide-open aperture also created a shallow depth of field which allows only a small portion of the image to be in focus creating a dreamy look and feel to the image.
