LYDON CONTRACTING LTD LATEST NEWS FROM YOUR UTILITIES & CIVIL ENGINEERING EXPERTS

Welcome to the November 2025 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.

Strong foundations

Our substation build at Dallington Grange in Northampton is now starting to rise from the ground. With the complex concrete works to form the two transformer bunds and the base of the high voltage switchroom complete, work has now started on construction of the superstructure of the substation building with the installation of the galvanised steel frame.

With this in place we are poised to start construction of the external brick and block cavity walls which will be followed by the insulated metal roofing.

In additional to the main substation compound it also includes a concrete base for a small package substation which will distribute electrical supplies to local properties as the Dallington Grange site develops.

Works on the scheme will be completed early in the new year to enable the client to carry out internal fitout and equipment installations.

Digging deep

November saw works commence at a renewable energy scheme in Leicestershire where we are installing a new 11kV ducted cable route from a new DNO substation to the grid. The teams have made a great start with the cable route and the substation base. With the route being in both agricultural and non-agricultural land, ensuring adequate depth of duct installation has been key which has been captured by our engineer.

Green energy

During October we commenced work on a site close to junction 13 of the M5 motorway in Gloucestershire to construct an EV charging hub. With the site being a former agricultural small holding, the first task of site clearance involved the dismantling of an existing barn. An added difficulty was that live 11kV overhead lines spanned the structure however with strict exclusion zones in place and specialist lifting equipment, the barn was dismantled safely.

During November, the next phase of work has been to strip the turf/topsoil and excavate to formation levels. With all excavations complete and spoil removed from site, the capping layer has been installed and proof rolled ready for the build up of levels and installation of drainage, below ground ducting and the pre cast EV charging infrastructure.

Next stop - North London

Works have continued in Palmers Green, North London where we are installing a new 11kV supply for the bus depot to power their new fleet of EV vehicles. This month we have had to excavate across two main roads, one requiring a road closure for safety of the public and operatives.

With this being London, there are a high number of existing assets in the ground (known and unknown!) including LV, HV, comms, Gas and Water utilities to navigate around. Where we have sufficient space, our vacuum excavator has proved invaluable, however were space is not available the teams have been hand digging.

ISO 45001

Since gaining ISO 9001 back in 2012 the company has gone from strength to strength. Last month we passed our ISO 9001 re-accreditation with flying colours and as part of our Commitment to Continuous Improvement, we were working towards our ISO 45001 Accreditation.

Well, we have done it again! We are now proud to announce we have gained our ISO 45001 (International standard for occupational health and safety management systems)

Key aspects and benefits of ISO 45001:

  • To reduce work-related accidents, illnesses, and fatalities by creating a framework for managing health and safety risks.
  • It uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodology for systematic management and continuous improvement.
  • It provides requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, including establishing policies, setting objectives, identifying hazards, and implementing controls.
  • Implementing the standard can lead to a safer work environment, reduced staff absence, better legal compliance, and improved organisational performance and resilience.

Investing in quality equipment

This month we have added a Husqvarna FS7000DL floor saw to our armoury. The product's size, weight and balance is optimised for high production in applications such as deep cutting asphalt and concrete.

With an impressive level of torque from the Deutz turbo diesel engine, it maximises production rates in the toughest conditions and contributes to a healthier working environment.

The saw can cut to a depth of 498mm and is already making swift work of cutting through reinforced concrete at a project in Wolverhampton.

Supporting the next generation

Supporting local sports clubs is something Lydon Contracting is proud of. We have been the main sponsor of Towcestrians Rugby Club for the past 8 years. In addition to this, for the 2nd season, we are sponsoring Sydney Wootton as she pursues her career in football for our local football club, MK Dons. We wish her every success in the future.

Tash-tastic Team!

Over the years Lydon Contracting have had great success in fund raising and raising the awareness of Men’s Health during the month of November. Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach out and support men. Alongside the team growing some impressive moustaches we hosted an evening of Quingo where friends, family and valued supply chain partners enjoyed an evening of Bingo and Quizzing. The evening was topped off with a giant raffle and charity auction (all kindly donated by supply chain partners, family and friends) raising over £7,000!

Thanks to all of those that attended or donated to our Movember event, if you have not yet donated and would like to its not too late, please follow the below link to our Lydon team page.
