A Message from the Headteacher

Some interesting thoughts from the CEO of Roblox.

The link above raises several interesting points. It isn’t from the Union of which I am a member, though illustrates challenges that Social Media brings.

Naturally, last week's mention of warmer weather has definitely proved premature however the sunshine is still being enjoyed at Birkwood as are some fantastic activities.

I have shown several visitors around school this week. The reason that I mention this is because I am fiercely proud of the superb behaviour of our children for the overwhelming majority of the time. The responsibility for the school’s behaviour culture and ethos falls firmly at my door as headteacher. Our school understands that children learn in many ways and by embracing inclusivity, we certainly see this on a day-to-day basis. The children at Birkwood make fantastic progress. Assessment data shows this clearly, as does simple day-to-day observation. Our Behaviour Ambassadors did their usual walk around school this week. Despite being hard taskmasters as you can imagine, their findings back up the words above.

Birkwood's Behaviour Ambassadors have been out & about!

I strongly believe that there is a reason that several children at this school come from out of our natural catchment area. The school is inclusive and thanks to an extremely hardworking staff attempts to provide experiences for our children that are of the highest possible quality. The facilities in school have been transformed and the children are revelling in these opportunities. We are sat on our highest all-round statistics in terms of national data and results.

I would be delighted to show parents around our school, to show these words are not shallow and over enthusiastic rhetoric. The pride that I have in my role as headteacher of our school is enormous and I hope that our families genuinely understand this. As mentioned, the school and its facilities are being transformed to enable experiences that will create lifelong memories. I am passionate that by following ‘The Birkwood Way’ and the school’s values, we will ensure our children are ready for the challenges of the 21st century, both in school and away from school.

The children know and staff know that ‘doing the right thing’ is at the core of everything we do. Our 100% respect value also spells out quite clearly what is expected from everyone at Birkwood. Naturally, we don't get everything right; we do try though!

I thank the vast majority of our families for your incredible support and understanding. I know everybody here is determined to do their best for our fantastic children.

In terms of experiences, our School Council trip to London was magnificent. Thank you to the staff who accompanied the travelling party. The Houses of Parliament are iconic and the London Eye provides views that are without parallel.

Thank you to our Well-being Champions for reading around school.

In sport, our Y5/6 boys football fixture against Ladywood was tricky! However, a last-minute goalkeeping change failed to stop the new keeper performing heroics. Mr. Walton was delighted with the attitude and effort from the team. I am very proud of this.

Our Year 5/6 basketball squad came third and secured the bronze award. Today, it’s Y3/4 basketball at Churchfield, so all the best to them!

A date for the families of Y4 Burrow class - the KS2 music festival will take place on Tuesday 24th June at the Metrodome Arena. Everyone welcome. Please see the below flyer.
