New State Command Chief assumes duties
The N.D. Air National Guard welcomed its newest senior enlisted leader on Dec. 5, 2020, as Chief Master Sgt. Duane “Dewey” Kangas assumed duties during a change of responsibility ceremony at the Air National Guard base in Fargo. Chief Master Sgt. Jeff Miller, the outgoing State Command Chief. served in this position for two years. The ceremony was presided over by Brig. Gen. Robert Schulte, N.D. National Guard chief of staff for Air. In his new leadership role, Kangas will advise N.D. National Guard leaders on matters concerning discipline, morale, welfare, effective utilization, professional development and career progression of the state’s Airmen. 131st mIlitary police training
Soldiers of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 131st Military Police Battalion, experienced an extremely busy Inactive Duty for Training (IDT) weekend, Dec. 5 to 6, 2020 at the Raymond J. Bohn armory in Bismarck. Transport Operators serve a vital role in the the Army’s transportation logistics team. Pfc. Trey Shereck and Pvt. Augustine Sapaty will be responsible for the supervision of operation and maintenance of wheeled vehicles driving over all types of terrain while safely transporting cargo and troops. MEB Soldiers see busy December drill
Soldiers of the 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade (MEB) learned to conduct external evaluations (EXEVALs) for the brigade's subordinate units during annual training exercises summer 2021. The training was conducted during their Inactive Duty for Training (IDT) weekend Dec. 5 to Dec. 6, 2020. The trained Soldiers will accompany these units and provide evaluations on their abilities to complete required tasks to standard. The feedback provided will give commander a better understanding of the status of their unit. EXEVAL is an objective assessment designed to provide accurate training metrics for commanders and ensure Soldiers are prepared to conduct their peacetime and wartime missions. Forty-eight Soldiers of the 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade (MEB) conducted a ROC, or Rehearsal of Concept, at the Fargo Armed Forces Reserve Center on Dec 6, 2020. The ROC provided an overview of III Corps Concept of Maneuver and the MEB’s role during their Warfighter Exercise at Fort Hood, TX from Jan 26 through Feb 11, 2021. Warfighters prepare commanders and their staffs to plan, prepare, fight, and win during large-scale combat operations where U.S. forces start at a position of disadvantage against a near peer threat.
Soldiers from 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade (MEB) will utilize numerous mission command systems (MCSs) in support of III Corps during their Warfighter Exercise at Fort Hood, Texas, from Jan. 26 through Feb 11, 2021. The MEB will provide command and control of up to seven battalions supporting area operations with systems featured during this training assembly such as Command Post of the Future (CPOF), Air Missile Defense Warning System (AMDWS), Tactical Airspace Integration System (TAIS), and Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS).

1st Dakota National Guard Band
Some U.S. Army helmets worn by enlisted men in the 1880’s were authorized plumes and cords. The style is very similar to the “Pickelhaube” spiked helmet made famous by the Germans in World War I. According to the Smithsonian Institute, “the U.S. Army was strongly influenced by French, British, and German hat styles. This European influence carried on until the 1902 uniform change."
