<> ARCHIPELAGO ADAPTATIONS <> THINGS THAT FLOAT: GOVERNORS ISLAND SPRING 2024 - GRADUATE DESIGN + RESEARCH STUDIO - INSTRUCTOR: MICHAEL GAMBLE

STUDIO OVERVIEW

Our Spring term Design and Research course is the inaugural New York Climate Exchange [NYCX] studio co-investigated with faculty and students from Pratt University, led by Professor David Erdman. The NYCX will be a leading research and demonstration enclave consisting of new and renovated buildings totaling approx. 400,000 sf.

Our studio will design and develop collateral infrastructure such as ferry landings both on and off the island, piers, visiting scholar housing, boat storage, field laboratories, parks, and public space amenities such as street furniture, toilet enclosures, signage and other things as yet discovered. Two novel foundation systems will be further investigated. Our conceptual armature is twofold: 1. Climate Adaptation Skepticism and 2. Climate Adaptation Innovation

Studio-specific program and objectives include: providing awareness of sea level rise, climate adaptation, natural beauty, and material phenomena; deploying advanced passive systems thinking in the areas of structure, material, enclosure, and comfort; understanding systems that harness energy cleanly from nature and converting it into power; accommodating floodwater as a placemaking source, rather than fight against it; and respecting ecologies and enhance through thoughtful and deliberate design.

All projects were submitted to the 2024 AIA Committee on the Environment Competition (COTE).
