Tritons Drop Twinbill to Top-Ranked Spartans
TAMPA, Fla. - A pair of 16-run games for the No. 1 Spartans completed the series sweep over the Eckerd baseball team in Tampa, by scores of 16-6 and a 16-0 shutout on Saturday afternoon.
The Tritons kept pace with the Spartans in the day's opener, with both squads recording 12 hits apiece, however Eckerd couldn't dig themselves out of the early hole to rally. An RBI single up the middle for Joey Bazydlo in the second gave Eckerd its only lead of the series. The Spartans responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame. They added two more in the third for a commanding 8-1 favor. The Tritons chipped away at the deficit, with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to trail 8-4. The Spartans doubled their score in the late innings, and despite a two-run home run by Luca Marino in the ninth, Eckerd fell 16-6.
The Spartans closed the series with a seven-inning shutout over the Tritons in the finale. The Tritons were only able to hold the Spartans scoreless in one of the seven innings, as Tampa racked up 16 runs on Eckerd, for the Tritons to fall 16-0 in seven innings by run-rule.
