MONTHLY MEETING - june 9, 2026
5:30-9:00pm
MINI-CLASS:
To be determined
LUKE KINNEY
GOING FURTHEr
Luke Kinney, Fly Fishing Guide and Owner.
In May we debated Leonardo da Vinci’s potential as a fishing guide, and in June we welcome a real live Eastern Sierra guide, Luke Kinney.
In this program, rich with stunning images and videos, Luke will take us to the less travelled paths, trails, lakes and streams around and beyond Mammoth. If your view of the Eastern Sierra is limited to Hot Creek, the Owens and Crowley, be prepared to expand those horizons and find solitude and lots of willing trout. Be prepared to break out that backpack and start hiking.
GOING FURTHER is a presentation on the elements that take us to greater lengths to experience a true adventure within fly fishing. We all know what it's like to fish one more bend and hike one more mile, as magic happens when we go beyond the average and ordinary. Luke Kinney will be sharing his experience when it comes to backcountry preparation, from gear selection, trip planning, to fly selection.
In the spirit of going further Luke will also focus on wading techniques, and the power of the fly change. As anglers we tend to get stuck in what works, but at times we are prompted to mix it up and explore new realms of possibilities. This presentation will hopefully inspire each angler to think outside the box and go further in their conquest for trout.

crowley opener!
SBF member ~ Eric Kramer
SBFF member Mike Reinesto and I were at Crowley for the opener. It was the best weather and fishing in the last 20 years. Also light crowds due to high gas prices and predicted snowstorms. We trolled Sat. and Sunday for 51 fish; a few of which were kept to smoke. We had alot of fish between 3 and 4 pounds, rainbows, browns and cuttys. Again, the largest average ever.
Monday and Tues. we midged with old friend Ernie Gulley. It was difficult fishing as the fish were biting in 25 feet of water. We used slip bobbers with long leaders and missed alot of strikes. Mike's first ever trout on a flyrod was an 18" Rainbow that jumped 4 times. I got a 20" Bow and a 19" Cut. Weds. we fished with another old friend, Doug Rodricks of Sierra Drifters. Same deal, deep water. I landed another 20" RB and Mike an 18" Brown. Mike ended up with 36 and I had 31 for the three days. Not good, but not bad. ~ Eric

From Feather to Trevally: A Not‑Quite Fly Fishing Tale
SBF Member - Daniel Wilson
Fished with 8wt x 9' feather (first time ocean fly fishing) in shallow ocean water off Nayarit/Nueva Vallarta, early May '26, and did not catch a fish.
Then switched to a spin cast with a rapala and promptly caught this Trevalle Jack, 9 kg (about 20 lbs).
Super dark red meat, way darker than the 5kg fish my friend caught. Almost a fly fishing story! I did learn how to fly cast from a boat though!

Jameson Lake: Alan with Chuck & Mary, Curtis & Katrina this weekend
We were in Boseman in early May to attend our niece’s graduation from Montana State.
On Monday we hired a guide for the day and fished the lower Madison near Ennis. The flow of the river at that point was lovely, and we lucked out with the late spring conditions- sunny, warm and windy.
Kaden Kelley from Fins and Feathers out of Boseman has been fishing since he was 3 years old and had a sixth sense about the river, with great stories and shared knowledge that entertained us the entire day. There were plenty of other guides out that day, some of whom were there on their day off with no clients in the boat. Even with all that traffic, there was plenty of water to go around. I had more than my share of tangles casting into the wind, but managed to lay the line down where Kaden directed me to most of the time.
Tom and I enjoyed a “Quadfecta” that day; hooking but not landing at least one of each: whitefish, golden trout, brown trout and cutthroat. My fish was not the hugest of the day, but it was one of my best ever, and gave me a genuine thrill to land it.
Another highlight of the day was witnessing a bald eagle miss his mark on the river as he soared up near us to perch on the cliffside above. (Main image - left).
Kaden spotted its victim- a good-sized White Fish laying in the water, which he waded to and held up for the eagle to see if the raptor would come take it out of his hands. No such luck. Kaden got back in the boat, and to our delight, we looked back to see that eagle swoop down to reclaim its catch in the water. I’ll never forget the encounter with that magnificent bird, its white feathered leggings gripping its prize. It was really difficult to manage a cell phone to take pictures of the action with all that was going on, but here are two of the best.

what does pyramid lake & casinos have in common? - the odds of winning!
SBF Member ~ Greg Starcak
This was taken on April 8 during a 4-day trip to Pyramid Lake. While this is typically peak season for the lake, the fishing went stone cold. Zero indicator takedowns between myself and my partner, Phil Armstrong, in three days of fishing.
It was pretty much the same story for everyone that week. I can only theorize that the water temps had risen, sending the fish into deeper water. This was the first time for Phil in 14 years of fishing Pyramid and not catching anything. The positive was the weather at the lake at times went to sheet glass. It was beautiful, so not a total waste of time. Plus it was easy getting a favorable spot the place my ladder.
