Indigenous Remembrance Day
Did you know that November 8 is Indigenous Remembrance Day? This important day in Canada honours the contributions of Indigenous peoples to the Canadian military, recognizing the sacrifices and service of Indigenous veterans throughout history. In addition, Indigenous veterans are also acknowledged during the nationwide Remembrance Day ceremonies on November 11, when Canadians come together to pay tribute to all who have served and continue to serve in the military.
Both of these observances are an opportunity to reflect on the courage and dedication of those who fought for our freedoms. Find out more about Indigenous Veterans.
Nanaimo Remembers
For 11 days leading up to Remembrance Day, nearly 200 names of Nanaimo soldiers who died during the First and Second World Wars will be displayed in prominent locations across the city.
Nanaimo Remembers is a unique video memorial project that displays details about the fallen soldiers listed on the Dallas Square Cenotaph downtown. The project outlines each soldier’s name, rank and battalion (information from the Cenotaph) as well as – when available – their pre-war profession, when they died and at what age, where they are buried and their specific connection to Nanaimo.

Bikes for Kids Supporting our Students
A big shout out to the Nowik Bikes for Kids program that continues to provide bicycles to students throughout the district. In the photos below, students from Ladysmith Secondary were recent benefactors and Karen Sprott from Dover Bay Secondary received bicycles to deliver to students. Thanks for supporting our schools.
In conjunction with the RCMP, the Nowik Bikes for Kids program, acquires bicycles, gets them serviced and out to children in the community. As well, the Nanaimo Brain Injury Society provides helmets for all students. Want to learn more? Know someone who could benefit? Visit the Nowik Bikes for Kids program.
