Day 1
Today we went to Tuscan Village to take a cooking class. We learned how to make various shapes of pasta with just a few basic ingredients. While the ingredients may have been basic, getting the balance correct was tricky. "I think my pasta turned out well, but I will find out when I cook it! A challenge was when my pasta dough wasn’t mixing and the instructor helped me with it. I can use cooking skills for my whole life and especially when I go to college," Sonja Curley explained.
"It was hard to follow the chefs instructions because he seemed so natural in his process," Nick said, but he feels confident that he can do it himself in the future, "I can 100% see myself delving deep into cooking Italian food."
Day 2
Today was a fun day with a cooking challenge. We had to go grocery shopping with a limited budget and then prepare a meal for our group. We quickly learned that groceries (especially meats) are expensive and we had to make choices to stay within our budget. Then we cooked the meals and discovered many of the challenges associated with preparing food.
Day 3
I learned about credit cards, first aid, and embroidery. Today went well but I want to learn more about credit cards and I was also struggling with the embroidering at first but I started to get it towards the end. I can use these skills in life when I need to get a credit card and now I know about what to do t avoid getting into debt. -Sonja
Day 4
Today we traveled to Boston and went to the Museum of Fine Art. While in the museum we went on a scavenger hunt to find certain artwork. Some of the pieces we were looking for were ones that told a story, challenged social norms, and connected to history. After the museum we had lunch in the North End!
Day 5
Today, we worked with Matt Belmont from maintenance and learned how to change a tire along with other important aspects of car maintenance. We then cleaned the glass in the rink before shadowing and assisting the housekeeping staff in the gym, gaining insight into their daily tasks. To finish the day, we built a birdhouse, putting our hands-on skills to use. Each of these experiences provided valuable learning lessons, helping us develop practical knowledge and a deeper appreciation for different types of work.
