In a ground-breaking collaboration with Creative Manchester and Turing Innovation Catalyst Manchester, Digital Futures set the stage for a transformative series of events throughout March 2024, focused on bringing together people in Manchester working in CreaTech - roles at the intersection of the creative, technology and digital sectors. This series of events aimed to build a network to provide support, funding and connections to help grow this sector. These events by The University of Manchester unfolded with a vibrant energy that echoed the aspirations of the Greater Manchester city region to develop the CreaTech sector and to facilitate partnerships between the university and the wider GM Business Community.
Our first event focused on bringing together a network of individuals interested and working in the gaming/animation/VR/AR industry within Greater Manchester, to uncover the overall theme of “How Do We Make Manchester Great?”
The event kicked off with a warm welcome during the arrival and registration period, where attendees began to immerse themselves in the promising atmosphere of collaboration.
To open the event up, Digital Futures Director, Professor Chris Taylor, and Director for Creative Manchester, Professor John McAuliffe, took the spotlight with an engaging introduction of Digital Futures and Creative Manchester, and why we have launched this network. Their insights paved the way for an exploration of the overarching theme: "How Do We Make Manchester Great?"
James Butcher, the Education Development Manager at Epic Games, captured the audience's attention with an insightful opening talk. Drawing from his wealth of experience, James delved into the world of the gaming, animation, VR, and AR industry, offering a glimpse into the cutting-edge developments reshaping the landscape.
Following the opening talks, everyone then transitioned into a series of breakout group discussions. Attendees were encouraged to actively participate in conversations that revolved around crucial topics including Skills, Greater Manchester Community, How Universities Can Be Engaged, and Collaborative R&D. These discussions served as a pot of ideas, fostering an exchange of insights that illuminated the path forward for the CreaTech sector in Manchester.
A well-deserved refreshment break allowed participants to recharge and continue their conversations over drinks and canapés. The break also facilitated networking opportunities, enabling attendees to forge new connections and strengthen existing ones.

As the CreaTech Network Series continued its mission to unite Manchester's creative and technological communities, a new chapter unfolded, spotlighting mavericks in artisan arts and crafts who are interested in digital. Hosted by The University of Manchester, this event served as a nexus for artisans eager to explore the transformative potential of CreaTech, positioning themselves at the intersection of the digital and creative sectors.
The event commenced with a vibrant influx of attendees, each eager to embark on a journey of exploration and collaboration. Professor John McAuliffe, Director for Creative Manchester, alongside GRIT Studios, extended a warm welcome to all participants. Their introductory remarks underscored the event's pivotal role in bridging the gap between tradition and innovation, laying the groundwork for this exciting event.
The agenda unfolded with lightning talks from artisans; Mural artist Oskar With A K and visual artist Andee Collard captivated the audience with their insights into the evolving landscape of artisan arts and crafts in the digital age. Their talks served as a catalyst for reflection and inspiration, igniting a collective vision for the future of the sector.
Attendees delved into a group discussion, engaging in a multifaceted exploration of key topics. From discussions on skills to strategies for engaging universities and fostering collaborative R&D, participants immersed themselves in dialogue aimed at unlocking the sector's untapped potential. They looked at skills beyond soft skills and technical skills, transparency in the community and universities for collaboration and paving avenues for learning or training to intersect digital and art.
A drinks reception provided attendees with the opportunity to mingle and immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of GRIT Studios. Participants had the chance to explore the studios of GRIT artists, forging connections and gaining first-hand insights.
As we reflect on this transformative event, the echoes of collaboration and creativity linger, serving as a testament to Manchester's enduring spirit of innovation. With each gathering, the CreaTech Network Series continues to chart a path towards a future where tradition and innovation converge, propelling Manchester's artisan arts and crafts sector to new heights of success.

The air was buzzing with creativity and innovation as The University of Manchester’s next CreaTech Network event unfolded, focused on exploring the sonic realm. Held in the dynamic atmosphere of Arbeta, the event brought together enthusiasts, experts, and visionaries from diverse backgrounds, all united by their passion for the intersection of creativity, technology, and sound.
We kicked off arrival and registration where attendees mingled eagerly, exchanging ideas and forging connections with a side of refreshments and treats. It was inspiring to witness the breadth and depth of talent present in the room, underscoring the vast potential for collaboration and innovation within the CreaTech community. The event commenced with a warm welcome to all participants from Professor John McAuliffe, Director for Creative Manchester, setting the stage for an enriching and engaging experience. His words resonated deeply with attendees, sparking innovative conversations, curiosity and excitement for the day ahead.
The highlight of the afternoon was undoubtedly the keynote address, delivered by Sam Oliveira, Director of Reform Radio. Sam illuminated how they were using the transformative power of sound and technology in re-shaping our youth workforce, experiences and emotions and ignited new ideas for the future of sound sector.
Attendees parted into groups for breakout sessions and in-depth discussions. Throughout the evening, vibrant discussions echoed across Arbeta as attendees engaged in lively conversations about skills, Greater Manchester community, engaging and collaborating with universities. From immersive audio experiences to cutting-edge innovations in sound design, the breadth of topics covered was truly inspiring. Attendees then took to sharing and summarising the insights and ideas from their group discussions to the others, catching up on all the fruitful conversations.
As the evening drew to a close, attendees gathered once more for networking over drinks and delicious canapes. Participants exchanged insights, laughs and ideas, underscoring the collaborative spirit that defines the CreaTech community of Manchester.
The CreaTech Network Sound event has not only provided us with valuable perceptions and connections but has also served as a reminder of the boundless potential that lies at the intersection of creativity and technology. We look forward to the next instalment in the series, eager to continue our exploration of the ever-evolving landscape of Createch.

On 25th March 2024, the fourth and penultimate event in the CreaTech Network series took place at Fire Up Rochdale, bringing together creatives who have an interest in digital technology, AI and building community around Manchester. Furthering the CreaTech ethos, the event connected inspired individuals who wanted to understand how to keep at the front of technological change in a fast-paced city and how their work practice has adapted to the advances in accessible AI.
The event began with attendees entering Fire Up Rochdale filled with creative ideas and a thirst to collaborate. Director of Creative Manchester, Professor John McAuliffe and Turing Innovation Catalyst's Engagement Manager, Etta Effah, gave everyone a warm welcome to the event and extended a hand from the University of Manchester. The introductions of Digital Futures, Creative Manchester and Turing Innovation Catalyst gave the attendees an understanding of how The University of Manchester can be engaged in building a creative community around Manchester and set the scene for the discussions to ensue.
At the heart of the event, Director for Nuvelica Limited, Vlad Mulhem, gave an enthralling presentation about the creative application of AI in his expertise, using technology to uncover and maximize creative output and find new ways to view images and media. Attendees were inspired to view their practice in a new light and think creatively about the use of AI in their work.
Shortly following, the attendees divided into breakout rooms to discuss topics surrounding the intersection of creative and technological development in Manchester, looking at the skills necessary to develop technological understanding in a creative space, as well as the Greater Manchester AI ecosystem and how it can be extended to currently overlooked creative communities around the city. They also discussed The University of Manchester’s role as an engaging force in this creative landscape and how collaborative R&D can break down existing barriers and distinctions to make the city more interdisciplinary.
After such enlightening discussion, attendees mingled with hot drinks in hand to make connections and learn about one another’s perspectives and backgrounds, encapsulating the CreaTech ethos and developing their networks.
As the CreaTech Network Creative AI event drew to a close, we reflect on the exciting potential all attendees have reflected through the CreaTech network and look forward to the next and final instalment in the CreaTech Network Series.
The final instalment in the CreaTech Network Series surrounded the theme of Fashion, taking place in the iconic Halle St Peter’s in Ancoats, Manchester on 28th March 2024. Bringing together professionals and enthusiasts in the Fashion scene around Manchester, the space hummed with chatter and potential as we kicked off the event.
As attendees arrived, the hall filled with creative conversation and chatter. Director of Creative Manchester, Professor John McAuliffe and Director of Digital Futures, Professor Chris Taylor gave attendees a warm welcome and took a moment to outline The University of Manchester’s engaging opportunities for creatives in and around Manchester, setting the scene for the rest of the event and giving context for the conversations to take place.
A fascinating talk by Boby Wong, Senior Technical Consultant for Style3D, took place at the centre of the event, discussing the recent developments around fashion technology and the intersection of technology and creativity in his work practise. As an experienced consultant with a background in apparel machinery, 3D virtual sampling, and technical design, his expertise in the consumer goods industry has given him extensive insight into the intersection between creativity, digitality and fashion manufacturing. His experience in the fashion industry gave deep insight into the areas of current growth and opportunities where technology and creativity can create positive change.
Migrating to the breakout groups, attendees got to know one another and discuss pressing topics surrounding the growth of Manchester as a modern center of fashion development and technology exploration. Manchester’s history, deeply rooted in the cotton industry and fabric creation, makes it a prime environment and an inspiring hub of contemporary fashion exploration, and discussion topics, such as skills the Greater Manchester Community, how Universities can be engaged, and collaborative R&D, helped engage attendees with the transformative landscape of creative and technology in Manchester.
After an engaging discussion, attendees took some time getting to know one another and build connections over canapes and drinks. Building the CreaTech Network and discuss their fashion backgrounds, the event encapsulated what the network series stands to accomplish.
As the final event in the CreaTech Network series, the CreaTech Fashion event was a wonderful close to a series of engaging and productive events, understanding and building a creative community around Manchester and understanding the University of Manchester’s changing role in an increasingly digital and technology focused landscape, supporting and giving confidence to creatives around the city.
