Museum Description- The theme I am choosing for my Personal Project is Ocean Landscape. I chose this theme because I deeply appreciate the ocean and its beautiful habits. The ocean, to me, is such a regal place, and I think having a museum about it would be fun to create. I am naturally drawn to the ocean’s aesthetic and aura. I have often wanted to look at the beach and its beautiful nature, and I think being able to do that in my project will be fulfilling. I plan on having about three categories within my ocean landscape theme. I plan to include many different ocean landscape genres, such as sunsets, calm waters, and land and sea. Those will be my three main topics going into this project, and I think all three capture the Ocean Landscape beautifully.
Impact Statement- I want my visitors to experience calmness and awe. I want people to look at the art and not feel stressed or overwhelmed. I want others to see the beauty of such a common thing surrounding us. I want those who may have never seen an ocean before to be intrigued, and I want those who see it daily to be inspired to look at it more. I would love to impact the world by being free and protecting your peace. The ocean is such a deep and mysterious place, sometimes just like people, but I think once you go deeper, you find more beautiful things that weren’t so easy to see from the beginning.

Room 1- Sunsets
This sunset room is presented to show the beauty of natural events. Sunsets are always different, and they show a lot of beautiful contrasting colors no matter the day. Being at peace and watching something develop over time allows your body to relax and take everything in without judgment. Watching sunsets can also help reduce stress levels significantly because of its natural light, which stimulates and triggers the release of dopamine, a “feel good” effect on the body. The artworks in this room are to show that sunsets are beautiful and the gateways to gratitude and mindfulness within individuals.

(Form) In Sunset Over Water by Joseph Mallord William Turner shows a great amount of color such as the complementary colors, being blue and orange. There is also a good amount of texture within the brush strokes within the sky and sand area. The sun is also an organic shape as well as the focal point of the artwork. There is also a great source of light, which allows for a cohesive atmosphere.
Sunset At Sea, John Singer Sargent, 1905
In the artwork Sunset At Sea by John Singer Sargent, shows a simple purple sunset with neutral beige tones. The artwork is very delicate and soft. I chose this artwork for my museum because of its beautiful nature and soft gradients of color.
(Form) Sunset at Sea by John Singer Sargent shows a purple sunset with beige and neutral tones. The purple presented in this artwork is a secondary color, as well as the light orange tones as well. The purple is also a good representation of a cool tone color. The artwork also has a good gradient of value, within the variety of the shading of purple. The artwork also shows asymmetry with the flow of the sunset; the right side has more purple than the left side, creating an asymmetrical look.
By The Sea, Piet Mondrian, 1909
The artwork, By the Sea by Piet Mondrian, shows a very vibrant and collective sunset. The artwork is full of color and has a lot of beautiful textures. I chose this artwork for my museum because of its beautiful colors, unique cloud shape and abstractness. It portrays a very different outlook on sunset but is still cohesive enough to convey the sunset feeling.
(Content) The subject matter of this artwork is to portray a beautiful sunset. This artwork has many forms, like texture, primary colors, and complementary colors. There is no intended allegory in this artwork, but the artist was able to commit to the sunset aesthetic fully. This artwork also has an expressed intent to properly produce a sunset artwork with many cohesive colors.
Sunset-Acapulco, Joseph Pennell, 1912
The artwork Sunset - Acapulco by Joseph Pennell portrays a beautiful, vibrant sunset with many technical colors. The artwork is so cohesive and elegant yet in your face and bold. I chose this artwork because of its eye-catching beauty and fearless color scheme.

For content, the artist’s subject matter was to portray a vibrant sunset, which did, in fact, come through.

Room 2- Land and Water
The second room is a land and sea room, which corresponds to the thought of strength and braveness. The land has to be strong in order to hold water's power and weight. The land stays put and allows water to flow freely but still holds its ground. Water, even though it is beautiful, can also be overwhelming at times. The artworks shown in this room are all different versions of the same idea. Although land and sea might be boring, it shows the very powerful objects of the world and how strong but delicate things are.
1. Cliff by Water 2. Sea And Cliffs 3. Ocean Cliffs 4. Sea Coast
Cliff By Water, Gustave Courbet
The artwork Cliff By Water by Gustave Courbet introduces a scene of a green-landscaped cliff and flowing water. The artwork is very simple but full of texture and detail. I chose this artwork because of its simplicity of colors but detailed, textured, and polished atmosphere.
(Content) The content presented in this artwork is the subject matter portrayal of the simple cliff and water and the overall thought of land and sea. The artist also used many different art forms in this piece, such as texture, movement, and color. There is also asymmetry within the piece because the right side has the cliff, and the left side has the water. There is also not a very intent full allegory within the piece, and the main point is just portraying a cliff and water but adding a level of complexity and technique.
Sea And Cliffs, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1885
In the artwork, Sea and Cliffs by Pierre-Auguste Renoir there are many beautiful tones of colors and many beautiful details. The artwork is full of texture and creativity. I chose this artwork because of its beautiful perspective of a cliff and water. As well as its abstract and simple portrayal of the elements.
(Form + Context) Sea and Cliffs by Pierre-Auguste Renoir presents a fascinating concept of cliffs and water. There are many forms such as analogous colors, which are orange and yellow, green and blue. There are also complementary colors, such as blue and orange and purple and yellow. Texture also plays a big part in this art piece. The context portrayed is that the artist most likely drew inspiration from a coast in France when he was in Normandy. He was drawn to the idea of open water and land merging. Pierre-Auguste was also fascinated with the idea of different landforms and lighting conditions. This artwork was done in 1885 and is an impressionist style with its loose brushstrokes and the depiction of the landscape.
Ocean Cliffs, Edward Mitchell Bannister, 1881
In the artwork, Ocean Cliffs by Edward Mitchell Bannister, depicts a typical landscape of a cliff and wild water. The artwork is very strong and bold. I chose this artwork because of its strong features and movement. I love how the cliff looks like a bear's side profile and how the water is realistic within its natural movement.
(Content) The overall grasp of this artwork is to show the concept of a cliff and water. This art piece depicts many symbols, such as the shape of the bear's side profile, that could potentially connect to strength because bears are strong animals, just like how land is strong and stable to be able to withstand the heaviness of water. The artwork also has many forms, like movement within the water. There is also a good amount of texture and detail. There aren’t too many colors but a good number of shapes within the landscape. The shape, although it looks geometric, is actually an organic shape.
Sea Coast, Tadeusz Makowski, 1910
The artwork Sea Coast shows ocean water touching the land with a little red house and moon in the scenery. It is very calm and peaceful. I chose to use this artwork for my museum because of its simplicity and natural beauty.
(From) Sea Coast by Tadeusz Makowski shows a lot of colors, such as cool tone colors within the blues, purples, and greens and complementary colors with the beige/orange sand and blue water. There are curved lines with the water and land outline and with the moon in the sky. The art piece is also naturalistic and figurative within its natural and simple portrayal of the ocean and land. The purple clouds are organic shapes and the moon and house in the artwork are geometric shapes.

Room 3- Calm Seas
The third room, calm seas, represents being at peace. Water can be very difficult to comprehend because of its powerful nature, but these artworks do an amazing job of creating the aura of being at peace and feeling relaxed. Being at peace allows the mind to be nonjudgmental and to be in the moment. Calm seas can allow for a new outlook on life because of their tranquil and serene state. These artworks are all different in their own way, but all are able to convey the feeling of peace.
1. The Calm Sea 2. Ship At Sea 3. Calm Sea 4. Southend Sunset
The Calm Sea, Gustave Courbet, 1869
The Calm Sea by Gustave Courbet is very still and peaceful. Although it is very simple, it is still very beautiful with its scenery. I chose this artwork for my museum because of its simplicity and calm nature. Most of the time, oceans are depicted as rough and full of movement, and I think it’s refreshing to see an ocean still and at peace.
(Context) This artwork, although simple, is very meaningful to the artist. Courbet painted this artwork while looking out at the view of the English Channel when he visited Étretat, which is along the coast of Normandy. He painted this artwork in August, so it was close to summer, but it was also going into the colder months. The ocean, particularly in this artwork, is shown at low tide with boats out on the water. This artwork exemplifies the Realism style because of its rough and unique paint texture. This artwork is a part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which I bet Courbet would’ve been proud of.
Ship At Sea, Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazosky, 1895
In the artwork, Ship At Sea by Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazosky , has a beautiful contrast of color and scenery. This artwork is very bright and full of details. I chose this artwork because of the ship out at water and the seagulls. The artwork although it is very calm also has a sense of movement within the details and objects that are featured.
(Form) Ship At Sea by Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazosky is a very beautiful piece of art. It has many forms of art, starting with asymmetry within the fact that there is a big mountain on the left side and a small ship on the right. The pirate ship has many curved lines within its shape, and it’s not considered a geometric or organic shape because of its complexity. However, the seagulls and the mountain are considered organic shapes. There are also analogous colors within this art piece; the yellow, green, and blue are all next to each other on the color. This artwork, although it does not have a lot going on there, is a good sense of movement and balance within it.
Calm Sea, Gustave Courbet, 1866
The artwork Calm Sea by Gustave Courbet depicts a calm and steady sea in a beautiful way. The ocean color is beautiful, and the sky compliments the blue and green tones of the water very well. I chose this artwork for my museum because of its stillness and the colors that work well together.
(Context) Like Gustave's other artworks, this painting was again inspired by the English Channel on the Normandy coast. He very much enjoyed painting seascapes. Again, this artwork is considered to have a Realism style, just like his other artworks. Courbet was inspired heavily by tranquility and stillness. This artwork is also at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, like the earlier painting, The Calm Sea. Gustave Courbet was also specifically inspired by Johannesburg Vermeer and Rembrandt, Dutch artists who depicted their artwork as day-to-day activities and realistic objects. This artwork, although calm, still has a good number of details and colors.
Southend-Sunset, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, 1882-1884
In the artwork, Southend - Sunset by James Abbott McNeill Whistler has many beautiful delicate colors and water markings. This artwork even though is not realistic, you can tell it’s the ocean with a significant sunset showing. I chose this artwork because it’s very beautiful and simple but has a sense of elegance and gracefulness.
(Form) Southend - Sunset by James Abbott McNeill Whistler has many different art forms present within this art piece. This artwork has analogous colors: blue, green, red, and orange. There are also complementary colors, such as blue and orange tones, within the sunset scenery. The primary colors, red, blue, and yellow, are also shown in this artwork. Horizontal lines are also present in this artwork because of the pier-looking objects in the middle. There is also a good amount of balance and symmetry. The brush strokes also give the artwork a deeper dimension and depth.
