Newbury Primary School Issue 10 - Friday 26th July 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

We warmly welcome back our families to Term 3. We trust your children had a restful break and are ready for a term of focused learning, enriching learning experiences and continued social and emotional development.

Term 3 provides further opportunity for students to continue to strive to do their best and develop their social, emotional and academic learning.

To our new families who have joined us, we welcome you to the Newbury Primary School community and thank you for choosing our school. We trust that you and your child feel welcome and comfortable in our school community.

As the flu season is upon us we encourage all of our families to please monitor your child for any symptoms and keep them home if they are unwell.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PROCEDURES:

Over the last few weeks, we have had situations that have prompted us to enact our school safety procedures, including lockdowns. These lockdowns are a result of challenging behaviours from students. Due to privacy, we are unable to disclose further information about what has occurred.

Rest assured that during each of these incidents, the situation was dealt with promptly with the support from leadership and support staff. We regularly practice and review our safety procedures and we are pleased at the manner in which students responded. The health, safety and wellbeing of our staff and students remains our top priority.

We appreciate your support and understanding.

FIRST AID TIPS:

Please ensure that if your child is sick or showing any Covid symptoms you keep them home until they no longer have any symptoms.

Please remember to pack a change of clothes in your child’s bag, as accidents do happen. This will prevent us from having to call and request you bring a change of clothes to school.

Also a reminder if your child has vomited or has gastro, please be aware that there is a 48hr exclusion to attend school. Please be aware that students must be excluded from school for 48 hours if they vomit or have gastro.

Medication: If there has been any change in your child’s medication, please email Attention First Aid to communciation@newburyps.vic.edu.au

EVERY DAY COUNTS- STUDENT ATTENDANCE:

Daily school attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don't fall behind both socially and developmentally. Children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age.

At Newbury Primary School, we are working very hard to ensure that students are at school and are given every opportunity to strive.

There are particular absences which require Principal approval.

The types of absence that require Principal approval are:

  • Bereavement
  • School refusal
  • Family holiday
  • Cultural observance- example Eid, Ramadan
  • Leisure or social activities
  • Special event
  • Participation in elite sporting event/training

Please contact the Principal via the school absences email on absences@newburyps.vic.edu.au to seek approval.

Please note that if your child is away you are required to notify the school of your child’s absence and the reason why they are absent. This can be done through Sentral or by calling the office on 8691 6900.

SCHOOL UNIFORM:

Sadly, we have noticed a number of students who are coming to school each day not wearing the correct school uniform.

The school jacket, dress, tunic and top (short and long sleeve) can be purchased from PSW in Campbellfield either in store 2/283 Rex Rd, Campbellfield VIC 3061 or online https://www.psw.com.au/schools/newbury-primary-school.html

School beanies and hats can be purchased from PSW as well or via QKR and will be delivered to your child’s classroom the following day. We also have a small number of these available for purchase at the office.

Black pants/short/skirts/skorts do not need to be purchased from the uniform shop. These items can be purchased from Big W, Best & Less, Target etc as long as they are black only. Please note that no hoodies are to be worn.

Only school jackets are to be worn. Plain black jackets are not an approved uniform item.

We also have a number of second-hand uniform items available to purchase from QKR which includes items that have been generously donated to the school. Uniform donations are accepted at the office throughout the year and are very much appreciated.

If you are experiencing financial hardship and require assistance, please email the school communication@newburyps.vic.edu.au and it will be forwarded onto the Wellbeing community.

CHILD SAFE STANDARDS:

The Victorian Government has announced new Child Safe Standards to further strengthen child safety across organisations, including schools. The new standards recognise the critical importance of families and the broader school community in maintaining and promoting child safety and wellbeing.

Newbury Primary School is committed to providing a child safe and child friendly environment, where students are safe and feel safe.

Our child safety and wellbeing policies outline the measures and strategies we have in place to support, promote and maintain the safety and wellbeing of our students: The policies include:

• Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy

• Child Safety Code of Conduct

• Child Safe Standards Risk Register

• Child safety Responding and Reporting Obligations Policy and Procedure

• Student Wellbeing and Engagement Policy

• Bullying Prevention Policy

• Volunteers Policy

• Digital Learning Policy

Newbury Primary School has reviewed and updated our child safety policies and procedures to ensure they meet the requirements of the new standards. Our Child Safe Standards policies are available to view on our school website newbury.ps@edumail.vic,.gov.au

BIKES AND SCOOTERS:

At Newbury Primary School, we promote health and fitness and encourage students to ride or scooter to school as a great way of starting their day. It is terrific to see many students riding their bikes or scooters to school, which assists them in being healthy. Please make sure your child is wearing a helmet and that once they enter the school grounds, they walk their bike or scooter in. When crossing the road, students should also walk their bike or scooters across the crossing for additional safety.

WE ARE PAPERLESS:

Just a reminder that all information notices will be delivered through Sentral and school website. Only notices that require parent permission will be sent home.

Please check the app or website regularly for updated information.

SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL:

Please note that supervision for students before school commences at 8:45am and after school until 3:25pm. Staff are not on duty beyond these times. Please do not drop off your child before this time or leave them waiting after school beyond this time as they will not be supervised.

ALL DAY GRAZING:

At Newbury Primary School, we understand that students need food to fuel their brain and that they are hungry during the day. It is great to visit classrooms and see students nibbling on carrot sticks, cheese, rice crackers, fresh or dried fruit, yoghurt or vegetables. We encourage students to bring along healthy snacks that they can munch on in class so ensure you pack some into their lunchboxes. Some suggestions include; baby cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, dip and crackers, pretzels and small cans of tuna. Having these in containers where possible, also helps to reduce the amount of rubbish around the school. Please refrain from providing food that may affect any anaphylactic students.
