The Byronian June 2025

Fostering Respect

Respect – allied with inclusion, diversity, collaboration and sustainability – is key to our ethos. We put this into practice with several events this year that deserve their own special mention.

Through the ‘We Are Byronians’ banner competition we celebrated Lord Byron in relation to our own CARE values, showcasing the cultural, artistic, moral and political legacy of this incredible poet, philhellene and campaigner.

For International Mother Tongue Day, vibrant language trees around the school showcased the diversity and richness of native languages in our community.

Remembrance Day was marked with moving tributes, including our student leader and choir representation at the War Cemetery ceremony in Phaleron and our own event on site – including personal testimonies from Mr McConnell-Wood and Mr Porter who shared their grandfathers’ experiences of wartime.

For World Philosophy Day we explored big questions at historic sites in and around Athens, ranging from discussing the meaning of happiness at Pnyx overlooking the Acropolis, to reflecting on the ethics of AI at Elefsina and Sounion.

A special learning day with volunteer firefighters gave our Primary students the opportunity to be a firefighter for a day while learning about how to protect our forests. In Primary, we also welcomed vulnerable children being looked after by the MITERA Child Protection Branch for a special day of games, creativity, and music-making together – a unique and deeply moving event. Wellbeing also remained a priority through our PSHRE lessons and student workshops and displays on resilience and digital safety.

Our Year 9s led the charge in eco-tourism, exploring the volcanic landscapes and ancient wonders of Milos while learning about sustainable tourism practice in a follow-up workshop. All students in Years 7 to 10 also took part in First Aid workshops – crucial knowledge at any stage of one’s life journey.

And – far too many to list here – Byron students went on a total of more than 75 day trips and eight residential trips, broadening their horizons and deepening connections in the process. An exciting year filled with fun and meaning!
