Sustaining a New World Summer Sustainability Escapades

Rose-Hulman students are committed to a sustainable future. This summer, several students demonstrated their dedication to sustainability through internship programs. From working at companies such as Proctor & Gamble and PepsiCo, to learning how Ecuadorian farms implement sustainability into their practices, these Rose students are using their education and skills to help save the world.

Becky Jones

Junior Becky Jones, a Munster, Indiana, native and civil engineering major, hopes to use the skills she's learned at Rose-Hulman to improve the environment. She aspires to earn a master's degree in environmental engineering, with the ultimate goal of working in land remediation to clean up superfund sites.

Jones serves as the vice president of infrastructure for Engineers for a Sustainable World and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. She is a Career Services Peer Advisor and researches erosion control methods along Lake Michigan with Dr. Kyle Kershaw.

Jones worked in the water resources department at Lochmueller Group this summer.

"My week consisted of helping professional engineers write technical reports, working on preliminary engineering reports, using Civil3D, communicating with contractors about products for different projects, and comparing specifications to project plans," Jones said. "Every few weeks, I also went into the field with the environmental service team to help identify wetlands for environmental reports."

Jones also played in the Pro-Am John Deere Classic Professional Golf Association as a representative of the First Tee organization this summer.

Korey Marlow

Korey Marlow, a senior from Schererville, Indiana, is majoring in chemical engineering and interned for Quaker Oats (part of PepsiCo) over the summer. He worked directly with the project engineering team on projects across the plant that included production, waste, and environmental health and safety (EHS).

Specifically, he worked on a full proposal of wastewater upgrades, a new air knife system for one of the Chewy Granola Bar lines, managing energy usage (gas, water, electric), and installed new safety equipment such as ladders and crossover support structures.

“I love the multifunctional aspect of PepsiCo,” said Marlow, who hopes to continue working with PepsiCo in an engineering role after graduation.

“We have the ability to network easily and visit other facilities like Gatorade, Frito-Lay and Pepsi. … I've been able to jump into a lot of projects to help the team out as well as make some amazing relationships!”

At Rose, Marlow is a pitcher for the baseball team. Learning to manage his time between sports and academics helped him during the summer internship.

Courtney Valmore

Courtney Valmore, a senior from Indianapolis, Indiana, is majoring in chemical engineering with a minor in economics. She will also graduate with a master’s degree in engineering management. This summer, Valmore interned at Proctor & Gamble where she worked on sustainable packaging for the Mr. Clean product. This internship complements her dream, which is to encourage large companies to prioritize sustainability in their manufacturing and production.

“I have loved being able to go to the store and see the products I am working on and talking to consumers directly,” said Valmore.

At Rose, Valmore is president of both the Student Government Association and Active Minds. She is involved in Alpha Chi Sigma and American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Sage Brown

Sage Brown, a sophomore studying civil engineering with a minor in sustainability from Traverse City, Michigan, traveled to Universidad San Francisco De Quito in Ecuador to study abroad this summer.

They had a turtle-ly awesome time exploring the nature and the culture of Quito and the Galapagos Islands, taking courses in Spanish, Ecuadorian ecosystems, and environmental policy.

"I loved staying with a host family because it was a really cool way to get thrown into the culture and language to get the full experience while I was in Ecuador," Brown said.

Brown, a Noblitt Scholar, is also involved in Unity and the Residence Hall Association. They serve as president of the Astronomical Society and a Sophomore Advisor for Scharpenberg Hall.

Brown wants to pursue a career in water infrastructure and environmental engineering and enjoyed learning how Ecuadorian farms implement sustainability into their practices.
