Reading Girls' School newsletter - 19 JuLY 2024

Principal's message

What a year it has been with so much to celebrate. We have finished the year with our annual sports day, and what a day it was. The sun shone, which was quite remarkable given the weather we have been having and the girls seem to very much enjoy the experience. The winning house was announced at Assembly - do ask your children who it was.

I wish to firstly thank all the students for their hard work, commitment to their studies and for being such amazing ambassadors for the school. Our Senior Student Leadership Team have made a significant contribution to the life of the school and they led on assembly today thanking all the staff who are leaving. They are a credit to us and to you.

I wish to also thank all the staff - without them none of this would be possible. The dedication they show to every child in this school is quite remarkable, creating an enriching learning environment, as well as creating a vast number of opportunities for them. Thank you!.

And finally, I wish to thank all of you for the support you show your children and RGS. We very much appreciate it. I have written to all of you, in parts to notify you of the new academic year arrangements.

GCSE Results day - Thursday 22 August 2024. Your Summer GCSE results can be collected from the Sports Hall between 9 & 11 am on that day only.

I wish our students, staff and all of you a well-deserved summer break.

Kind regards

Marika Farrugia, Principal

Principal's Surgery is held every Friday 8.15am – 9.00am.

Duke of Edinburgh Expedition 2024

All DofE participants were a credit to themselves and to the school as a whole. At times they were lost and when I was able to find them, I will never forget how calm and composed they were. All 7 teams demonstrated excellent teamwork throughout. I could not be any prouder of them all. Well done! - D Jones D of E Lead

D of E Social value : Volunteering.

I have said this before, but I could not be any prouder of the DofE girls. They spent 221 hours volunteering locally. This hard work and great contribution added £1166 to the local community. Well done! Also two year 9 classes who picked up rubbish around the school. Two year 10 classes also did so but no photo was taken. Well done to them! -D Jones D of E Lead

Year 8 Rounders Tournament

Well done to the Y8 Rounders Team who came third in their tournament. They were particularly good with their fielding getting many of the other teams out.

Y7 Rounders Tournament

The Year 7 Rounders Team came second in their tournament. We had some great hits which allowed half and full rounders to be scored. They got increasingly better with their fielding and made good tactical use of the rules in their second game. Well done.

Year 8 Inter-House Rounders

All of Year 8 spent two hours out in the sunshine competing for their houses in a version of rounders called 'Beat the Ball'. The batters run around the bases non-stop whilst the fielders must pass the ball in base order, first to fourth and try and get the ball to fourth base before the batter gets there. Year 8 put on a great display of teamwork and skills with some exemplary batting and fielding.

The scores between some of the teams were very close, the final results were:

1st - Kirby

2nd- Malala

3rd- Angelou

4th- Lovelace

5th - Sherpa

6th- Parks

Congratulations Kirby!

Year 7 and 8 U14 Athletics League Finals

After working hard for 3 weeks in their league competitions, our athletes improved from last year and went into the 'C' finals. All our girls battled hard for their places in every event. We waited with bated breath as they announced the results and were overjoyed to have won our final. Fantastic work by the whole team, congratulations!

Athletics County Finals

Congratulations to three students from RGS who qualified for the Berkshire County athletics finals representing Reading: Macie Mae Soares Y10 Javelin, Lizzy Sanyu Y10 Discus and Mya Vaughn-Williams Y7 High Jump.

Sports Day Results

After having to postpone due to the rain two weeks ago, we were finally able to have our Sports Day. There was fierce competition between the houses in the races and in the Tug of War. Much ice-cream was consumed and there was great support from the spectators.

In the staff versus students' events, the Year 7 relay team beat everyone, staff and older students to win that relay and Parks were the victorious Tug of War Team beating the staff team at the end of Sports Day.

Once the points were all added up, congratulations again go to Kirby for retaining the Sports Day Cup.

Next academic year, we kick off straight away into football season, get practicing over the summer, Football Club will start on Monday 9th September for Y8,9,10 and 11and the first match for Y10 and 11 is on Thursday 11th September, first full week back.

They were accompanied by Mrs Thomson and Miss Tiernan and they presented their amazing ideas in front of a panel of judges from both Zebra Technologies and their educational partners. A group of Year 9 Geography students attended the UrbanPlan celebration event in London's Docklands. They were the winning team from an event in school."We enjoyed interacting and talking with people from other schools, and finding out about the different companies that work in urban development. The cable car ride and escape room activity were really fun!" -Maha Mahalakshmi and Ayesha Bukhory

Aspire2 Poetry Competition

Once again, the Whitley charity Aspire2 organised a wonderful poetry competition. There were two categories to contest-Young Poet Of The Year and Young Performance Poet Of The Year. Reading Girls’ School provided entrants for both and we set off to the University of Reading with high hopes of success.

We were entertained by performances from some Key Stage 2 poets and by a reading from A.F. Harrold, a poet who was also one of the esteemed panel of judges.

The Key Stage 3 and 4 recitation section saw strong competition from the John Madejski Academy pupils. Maimuna Humphries was runner up in this section and Mr Harrold presented her with a trophy and a certificate. Tanushree Bopardikar was awarded first prize for the Key Stage 4 written poem section and she also won a trophy and certificate.

Congratulations to everyone who wrote, participated and attended and thank you to our girls for, yet again, conducting themselves in an exemplary manner. - Mrs Smith

Cisco Insight Day : A group of year 8s visited the offices of Cisco for an Insight Day. Students involved were either winners in a Cisco activity in school or are part of the Robotics club. They took part in two challenges, talked with staff about their work and had a tour of the offices.

"The trip to Cisco was very fun and educational! We did a variety of different activities such as coding and presenting and we had a tour of the headquarters ( as shown in the pictures). Our lovely helper Melissa showed us our way around Cisco and thoroughly explained what Cisco is and what it’s like working there. This trip made me realize what working would be like and how Cisco’s system is inclusive about who they pick and what they do. I had a lot of fun, and I would like to go back in the future". -Afsa

Year 7s delivering a practical about speed and kinetic energy on their last lesson in science.
Year 10s and the World of Work : Year 10 PSHE classes have had visitors recently from the world of work including VirginMedia, FPS and Kier Construction. Balfour Beatty, who are working on the M4 development, and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory also took part. They've described the wide range of jobs in their companies, evaluating your strengths and weaknesses, opportunities for development, overcoming challenges and adversity, and responsibilities in the workplace. They have also talked about maintaining a positive presence online and given students work based tasks to try. It has been a great opportunity for the year 10s to find out more about the workplace and how to succeed. Thank you for all our wonderful volunteers!
Sew Yummy! Year 8 researched the soft sculptures of Holly Levell, who is inspired by the “everydayness” of the food packaging in her kitchen cupboards. The students made textile replicas of their favourite treat or snack. Using a combination of techniques such as tie-dye, applique, hand embroidery and machine sewing they were able to bring their designs to life - delicious!
The students involved in mentoring by KPMG visited their offices this week. After a tour of the offices and a welcome from the Reading office Senior Partner, there was a speed networking activity for students to find out about different roles at KPMG. They also took part in a challenge to design and present an app, and had their final mentoring session. Thank you KPMG for supporting our students and giving them this excellent opportunity
