Men's Soccer Tallies Four Goals in Opener Against Thomas, Battles Tight in Setback with Bowdoin
With a new head coach at the helm of Colby's Men's Soccer team (Sean Elvert), the Mules looked to impress its home crowd within the first week of action in Waterville.
Colby began the season Tuesday night with a statement win, striking for four second-half goals in a 4-1 victory over Thomas. Jacob Sams broke the deadlock in the 59th minute off a Ryan Stewart assist before Jude Gussen netted his first and second collegiate goals, including a quick strike just seconds after a penalty kick goal from Joseph Beshel. Stewart finished with two assists in the physical contest that saw 11 yellow cards between the two teams. Jackson Magee recorded two saves, earning his first win in net as a Mule.
In their first conference showdon of the season, Colby found itself down by two scores early and nearly rallied against rival Bowdoin. After the Polar Bears scored twice in the opening 20 minutes, the Mules cut the deficit when Santi Canencio Moreno converted a penalty kick late in the first half for his first collegiate strike. Goalkeeper play kept Colby close as Magee recorded five saves, but the second-half push fell short with the Mules moving to 1-1 on the season.
The Men's Soccer team will remain at home this week hosting Southern Maine Tuesday night and Tufts on Saturday.
Tied Late, #24 Bowdoin Sneaks Past Field Hockey to Begin NESCAC Series
With last year's season opener against the Polar Bears ending in a double overtime thriller, athletes from both squads knew it was going to be a tight battle once again to being the 2025 schedule.
Despite some key defensive stops and timely scoring, Colby came up just short against the 24th-ranked Polar Bears on Saturday by a score of 3-2. After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Mules rallied when Christina Sweeney netted the team's first goal of the season early in the third quarter. Following two quick goals from the Polar Bears to take back the lead, Lily Harrington added a fourth-quarter goal off a setup from Molly Mitchell to keep Colby within striking distance.
The Mules matched Bowdoin’s pace throughout, finishing with 23 shots and 12 penalty corners. Mitchell led Colby with seven shot attempts and an assist, while goalkeepers Opal O’Rourke and Ginna Jacoby combined for 11 saves. Despite the narrow loss, the Mules offensive pressure and late surge highlighted a strong effort in front of the home crowd.
Colby Field Hockey will hit the road Tuesday to face the University of New England Nor’Easters before taking on Tufts and Husson over the weekend.
