Director's Note
At MYT it is our priority to provide the most opportunities for our students as well as find new ways to challenge them and give them new experiences. After a series of contemporary musicals in the teen program, we felt it was time to try our hand at a classic musical. As time went on, it slowly became one of my personal favorite musicals. I find myself waking up and singing the songs, listening to the track unironically in the car and wishing that I had had the opportunity to be in this show when I was a teenager. I saw this show as an opportunity to allow students who feel they don’t fit into the “contemporary” category the chance to shine. This show not only challenged the students musically and in their dancing, but the staff as well. As educators, we are also always looking for new ways to grow. The students and staff spent weeks putting together the two biggest numbers in the musical “The Prince is Giving a Ball” and “10 Minutes Ago.” Not only were the songs over 6 minutes each, but they had specific stylized dancing that the staff and students were not used to in their choreography. Those are two of my proudest moments on stage during this show because I know how much went into them to make them clean and precise. This is one of the hardest working casts I’ve ever had the pleasure of directing. They get together outside of MYT to make sure they know exactly what they are doing and come to rehearsals with a positive attitude ready to learn and work. Together they have worked extremely hard to make something so beautiful. I am so thankful to the MYTeam for helping to make this show a success. Nich, thank you for always jumping in when I need you (did you catch him onstage?!) and for creating beautiful dances in our show. Cessa, thank you for always being my voice of reason and stepping in willingly with all of these crazy scene changes I’m making you and Nich do. Joe, thank you for all of your hard work in making the tech for this show so beautiful (I apologize for always picking the hardest shows technically, but I do appreciate all that you do to make it happen!) Carolyn, thank you for all of your help with costumes and making the magic I dreamed about come true! You help me to dream big and figure out ways to make it happen. Maureen, thank you for always being present in rehearsals and for putting so much time especially into all of the solos in the show. The students sound so lovely because of your direction. Jalina, thank you for jumping in whenever I need a helping hand and taking on the craziness of the props (there are a LOT in this show and you are never one to complain when I throw something else your way!) To the cast, I am extremely proud of you and the work you have put into this show. This one will hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for your patience, flexibility and time that you have dedicated to this show. It hasn’t gone unnoticed and I hope that everyone joins us in the spring for “Mary Poppins!”
