Awkward Moments are a London-based duo comprising of producer & electronic composer Mimi Xu, and classically trained multi-instrumentalist & lead vocalist MAGUIRE.
Individually, Mimi Xu is well known for her catwalk soundtracks, film scores, DJ sets, and has created immersive performance pieces for The Royal Academy of Arts, The Barbican, Meltdown Festival and The Gagosian Gallery. MAGUIRE is a classically trained pianist, vocalist, violist & violinist, who has performed at venues ranging from The Purcell Room at The Royal Festival Hall with the Arcade String Quartet, to Kings College Cambridge for BBC Choral Evensong.
SIX SEASONS – the new ambient neo-classical album from Awkward Moments – is a sonic meditation on the tug of war between man and nature. Analogue and digital worlds collide in this dystopian take on the natural seasons as they are warped and distorted by the destructive hand of technology. "How could we drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun?” – Nietzche pleads. In this collection of works that explores the man-made nature of time as a rigid yet malleable construct, we must accept that change is the only constant in a world of flux, and give into nature’s utter indifference. Mankind is forced to reckon with the devastation he has caused to the natural world but ultimately finds reconciliation as hope prevails and new life blooms amongst the rubble.
Awkward Moments represent a unique voice in contemporary and immersive performative art. Their live shows always inhabit the edginess of experimental art presentations, but are firmly rooted on the solid foundations of their multifold crafts ranging from music composition, scoring, narratives, live performance, costuming, videography and projection content.
With a series of multi-disciplinary live performances and instillations in the works SIX SEASONS was first brought to life with choreographer Harry Price at the sonically focused 17 Little Portland Street in June 2023. They will further collaborate with Valencia-based digital artists Pablo Alpe and Ana Piquer – pioneers in their field at developing cutting edge technologies to create interactive audiovisual installations. As part of the Vitamin Studio team their most notable collaboration with the Finnish National Opera for ‘Assembly X Opera Beyond’ used 3D mapping, transparent screens, and real-time visuals to bring new dimensions to the traditional opera experience. The series will continue with a diverse range of collaborators across art spaces and music venues alike.
