Roe Brothers Find Family in Sports By Nathan Conway

For student-athletes, high school sports are a means of connection with other students. High school sports create long-lasting friendships and bonds between teammates. For Cash and Jagger Roe, it is strengthening a bond between brothers. Senior Jagger Roe and sophomore Cash Roe both claim their main influences are their family. Cash and Jagger said that their parents are the most influential people in their lives, as well as each other. “My dad [is a big influence]. The way he carries himself is something that I admire, and I like to model that.’ Jagger explains. “A lot of times, I like to think about what he would do.”   Cash also sees his parents, both standout athletes at Valley View, as the motivation for his own determination. “My dad and my mom [are my main influences]. I’ve always looked up to them, and them telling me all the fun stories that they have experienced through sports made me want to develop my own [experiences],” Cash stated. “My family wants me to be better than they were, so that feels good. Jagger is a competitive kid, always pushing people. It makes me want to be like him.” Cash expressed that playing alongside his brother makes playing more fun and helps in navigating through obstacles.. “I play harder because I’ve always idolized him and I’ve always wanted to be on the same court with him. So being on the same court with him pushes me to play harder,” Cash said. Jagger agrees that having a brother as a teammate is a bonus on and off the court. “It makes it easier being able to talk to him outside of practices and games, and being able to talk about what to do and make jokes with each other. He is able to take harsher criticism. It comes more naturally, and it’s more fun too,” Jagger added. Outside of sports, the brothers enjoy spending time with their family and going out with friends. Jagger enjoys working out and playing video games, and Cash is a photographer, taking pictures at Valley View football games, among other subjects of his photography. The brothers both said that after high school, they will likely end their time playing sports. Jagger stated that his brother is his main reason for playing basketball this year. “I’m content with ending my time in sports. I know how hard I would have to work and weighed my options. It just isn’t for me,” Jagger stated.  “I honestly think if it weren't for Cash, I don’t know if I would play basketball. I don’t want to quit on my brother.” The Roes are proud of their achievements and accomplishments in sports, but know that what happens off the court is more important. “I want to be remembered and known as an uplifting person,” Jagger said. “I want people to know me for being a good person. I always try to be my best, and I hope people see me as more than just a sports player. I hope people see that I can help people in the community,” Cash explained.   Even after their time playing at Valley View ends, the Roe brothers will always have a teammate for life. While their time on the court is temporary, the bond they’ve strengthened through every practice and game is permanent.
