Harper wins eighth men's cross country national championship

Huntsville, AL – Harper (IL) wins the 2023 NJCAA DIII Men's Cross Country National Championship by scoring 53 team points and with four runners earning all-America honors. The Hawks top finisher was Albert Szewczyk whose mark of 26:29.70 was good enough for a fourth-place finish.

Defending champion DuPage (IL) finished as the runner-up with 97 points, and Mineral Area (MO) rounded out the top 3 with 110 points. Joliet (IL) and Oxford Emory (GA) round out the top 5 finishers.

Harper's men's team also won the 2023 National Championship, making it the first time since 2018 that Harper also won both the men's and women's cross-country national championships in the same year.

Harper takes home first with a 53-point finish. DuPage takes home silver and Mineral Area rounds out the top 3.

Harper put together a dominant team performance, seeing four student-athletes finish as all-Americans and all five finishers claim top-20 finishes.

The Hawks were led by sophomore Albert Szewczyk who finished in fourth place with a mark of 26:29.70.

Freshman Owen Whelan and sophomore Marcos Jaimes each earned a top-10 finish. Whelan's mark of 27:02.20 earned a 7th-place finish.

DuPage freshman led the Chaps with a mark of 26:10.40 and a second-place finish. The Chaps saw two more runners earn top-25 finishes over. DuPage finished with 97 points overall.

Mineral Area finished with a third-place finish with 110 points as a team. Sophomore Brad Ahrens was the top Cardinal finisher with a third-place finish and a 26:15.10 mark.

Sophomore Omar Mohamed (pictured) of Mohawk Valley was the individual national champion. Mohamed's mark of 26:01.70 bested the field by nearly 9 seconds.
