Active Travel, WOW Award & Modeshift STARS
At Moorlands Primary, we are proud to promote active travel—encouraging pupils, parents, and staff to walk, cycle, or scoot to school whenever possible.
Active travel supports healthier lifestyles, reduces congestion, and helps improve air quality around our school."
We’re delighted to have achieved recognition through the Modeshift STARS national award for our ongoing commitment to sustainable travel.
We also take part in the WOW Walk to School Challenge, where pupils record their journeys daily and earn badges for walking, cycling, or scooting at least once a week. It's a fun and motivating way to build healthy habits and celebrate active choices.
This reflects the fantastic efforts of our whole school community in making safer, greener travel choices every day."
Moorlands Primary School 'Yellow Bus' Information
Please note that Moorlands Staff are unable to pass on information regarding absences. Please contact the friendly Yellow Bus team directly and also let Moorlands know if your child is not going on the bus.
Moorland Staff support Reception and Key Stage 1 with the Yellow Bus. We will meet them from the bus daily and take them safely to the bus after school.
Park and Stride
Moorlands Primary to YMCA Laund Road
To support safer and more sustainable travel, we encourage families to use our Park & Stride option.
You can park at the YMCA on Laund Road (HD3 3XS) and walk the short distance to Moorlands Primary—just a 5 minute walk.
This helps reduce congestion around the school gates, promotes daily exercise, and creates a safer environment for all our pupils.
Be Bright Be Seen
Road Safety at Moorlands Primary
At Moorlands Primary, we teach our pupils the importance of being visible when walking, cycling, or scooting—especially during darker mornings and evenings.
Through our Be Bright, Be Seen campaign, children learn to wear bright or reflective clothing to help drivers spot them more easily.
It’s a simple but vital step in keeping everyone safe on the journey to and from school."
Our Autumn Term shop was sold out and it has been fantastic to see the children making use of their purchases to stay safe.
Fleet bikes available to borrow!
In November 2024, we took delivery of six fantastic fleet bikes from The Bikes College in Leeds.
We’re excited to share that these bikes now belong to Moorlands and are available for children to borrow free of charge!"
The bikes can be kept at home until your child outgrows them, at which point they can be returned to school for another child to enjoy.
They are suitable for children approximately 120–127cm tall (roughly 6–8 years old). Each bike comes with a helmet, and one of the bikes is fitted with stabilisers to support younger riders.
We also have spare inner tubes in case of punctures, and all bikes will be serviced in the summer term to keep them in top condition.
We hope this project will encourage more children to ride to school and help families leave the car at home when possible.
If you would like to borrow one, please contact the school office.
Anti-idling campaign
In the Autumn Term of 2024, our School Councillors launched an Anti Idling Campaign on Moorlands Road, asking drivers to turn off their engines during school drop-off and pick-up.
They shared a striking fact:
1 minute of idling equals 150 balloons worth of pollution!"
They took part in two campaign, outside of the school to remind everyone of this important message.
Why It Matters@
• Children’s Health: Idling engines emit harmful pollutants that worsen asthma, affect lung development, and impair learning—especially in young children.
• Air Quality: Pollution is concentrated right at school gates, where our children breathe it in. Idling produces more pollution than driving, and turning off the engine even for short waits helps.
How You Can Help
• Switch off your engine while waiting—even if it's just for a minute.
• Walk or cycle where you can to reduce traffic congestion.
• Tell others—spread the word to fellow parents and carers.
• Please support our children by switching off your engine and sharing this message.
Let’s work together for cleaner air and healthier kids!
Ready, Steady, Pedal
We were delighted that our school was selected to take part in an exciting initiative to become a Bike Friendly School, thanks to Bike Futures in partnership with Ready Steady Pedal and funding from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority! 🚴♂️🎉
As part of this project, our school received a range of fantastic cycling activities, including:
✅ Bike maintenance sessions
✅ Balance bike training for EYFS children
✅ Bike rides and journey planning for older children
✅ Cycle skills sessions for Year 2 and Year 5 pupils:
🚲 Learning to ride with confidence
🚲 Developing balance and coordination skills
🚲 Improving spatial awareness on the bike
🚲 Using brakes effectively
Road Safety
Reception had a visit from Kirklees Council to talk to us all about Road Safety.
They shared the story, ‘Teddy Takes a Walk’, and we completed lots of other activities during the day linked to Road Safety.
They made their own Road Safety signs and practised Road Safety in our outdoor provision using our bikes and scooters.
