northwestern Elementary Newsletter November 2025

A Message from the principal

Dear Parents,

Happy November! We have had an amazing first marking period! The first day of the 2nd Marking Period is Thursday, October 30. Report cards will be posted to the Sapphire Parent Portal on Friday, November 7. If you do not have a Parent Portal account, or if you need assistance accessing your account, please contact our office.

Teachers are looking forward to discussing your child’s progress so far this year at Parent-Teacher conferences, which will be held at the end of the month. Google Appointment Schedule links were sent out by teachers earlier this week. Please be sure to sign up for a conference time if you have not done so already. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers and community volunteers that made our October events so much fun! Between Safety Day and Boosterthon, it is no wonder why October flew right on by!

In addition to Parent-Teacher conferences this month, we will also be hosting a Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, November 7. This is another very special community event that our students, staff and families look forward to each year. Please refer to the form that was sent home for more information.

Finally, as a reminder, we will have early dismissals on November 21, 24, 25 and 26 for conferences. Students will be dismissed at 12:10PM on those days. If your child(ren) will have a different transportation need on the early dismissal days, please send an email to nweoffice@nwlehighsd.org as soon as possible.

On behalf of all NWE Faculty and Staff, we are thankful for all of our children and families.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Mrs. Krista Keys

VETERANS DAY!!!

NWE will proudly be observing Veterans Day on Friday, November 7th. To honor our Veterans, all students and staff are encouraged to wear RED, WHITE and BLUE (or a scout uniform) on Friday, Nov. 7th. We are also encouraging ALL veterans in our community to attend our Veterans Day Ceremony at 9:45 AM on November 7th. If you know a veteran that lives in our community (or have a relative from anywhere that is a veteran), please RSVP using the second page of this form: RSVP Form. All are encouraged to attend!

We are also hanging patriotic stars with the names of all service men and women who are important to our school. If you would like to honor a Veteran, please fill out the second half of the RSVP form above and return it to your child’s teacher ASAP. We would like to have MANY, MANY names in our gymnasium honoring our Veterans, so please take a moment to return this form. Thank you for taking the time to honor our military men and women this Veterans Day.

Library News

Books are SWEET! We're getting ready for our Fall Book Fair and we hope you and your student will shop with us! It's a great fundraising opportunity for our library to help buy new books and create experiences like author visits. Here's everything you need to know:

  • The in person Book Fair will run from Monday, November 17th through Friday, November 21st
  • The online Book Fair will also run during that whole week
  • Books range in price from $5.99 to $14.99 for paperback copies
  • All items purchased will have 6% tax added to the total
  • NEW this year: all cash purchases will be rounded up to the nearest dollar. NO COIN CHANGE will be given. This will support our Share the Fair program to give books to students through our Tiger's Reading Den Book Vending Machine!
  • We accept cash, check (payable to NWE), credit card and ewallet (more info coming home soon)
  • Special Family Event on Wednesday, November 19th from 8:30 am to 10:00 am in the Library. Enter through the green door to the left of the main entrance (Door #22)

Our students love to shop for books and it's even better when someone they know is helping out. To make this year's Book Fair a success, we need your help. You'll be assisting students by counting money, finding books, working the registers, restocking shelves, and setting up/tearing down. Please consider signing up for a time slot or two so we can offer shopping to all of our classes throughout the week! Thank you!

Nurses’ Notes

It is hard to believe that we are already nearing the end of the first marking period! Winter break will be here before we know it! The nurses have started conducting health screenings at Northwestern Elementary. Fifth grade is screened first and then we work backwards finishing with kindergarten. This process takes us several months to complete. The following is a list of screenings that are provided by Northwestern Lehigh School District and the grades in which each screening is conducted.

  1. Growth Screening, Height and Weight (all grades)
  2. Visual Screening, Distance and Near Vision (all grades), Depth perception and Color vision (Grade 2)
  3. Hearing Screening (Grades Kindergarten, 1, 2, 3, 7, 11 and special needs classes)
  4. Scoliosis Screening (Grade 7)

Results of all screenings will be made available on the Parent Portal when each grade level is completed. If your child fails a vision or hearing screening, you will receive a referral letter from the school nurses as soon as the screening is completed. If the school notifies you that these screenings have turned up a potential problem in your child, have them checked by a physician.

Sometimes your child’s physician will find that the suspected abnormality is not serious after all. Even so, this does not mean that the screening was inaccurate. Screening tests are designed to identify children who may have a problem, but a more thorough examination by a doctor is always necessary to determine the extent and severity of the condition. Please return completed referral forms after follow-up is conducted.

In compliance with the School Health Act of Pennsylvania, periodic physical and dental examinations are also required.

  1. Physical Examination (Grades Kindergarten, 6 and 11)
  2. Dental Examination (Kindergarten, 3rd and 7th grades)

Examinations by your family doctor and dentist are highly recommended and would provide the optimum care for your child. Notification of Special Examinations (Dental and Physical) will be sent home prior to the examination date. School examinations are provided at no cost, if desired by the parent/guardian. Appropriate forms may be obtained from the school nurse if you desire to have these services provided by your family doctor or dentist. Forms may also be downloaded from the school web site at www.nwlehighsd.org.

If you have any questions regarding screenings, please contact Mrs. Lingenfelter or Mrs. Diehl at Northwestern Elementary at 610-298-8661, ext. 4205 or nwenurses@nwlehighsd.org.
