Riverside Currents Week 9 Term 2 2025

From the Relieving Principal Ms Gleeson

Excelling at Sydney North Dance Festival

This week many of our dancing students have been involved in the Sydney North Public Schools Dance Festival. Riverside has a rich tradition of participating in this festival, leading the way in innovative choreography and demonstrating excellence in this popular performing art. Our Head Teacher PDHPE, Ms Nagle, reported that each time a Riverside ensemble was to perform the audience was abuzz with excitement, there was one performance that had the entire audience in tears, such was the emotional impact and power of the work. Some teachers from other visiting schools even said that they study the dances of Riverside from previous festival years to show their students the standard to which they should aspire. I believe there are two key ingredients at play here, that create the magic of excellence in performance. They are our dedicated and hard-working students representing us with grace and commitment, learning all they can to be the best in their field, and their two teachers, Ms Mitchell and Ms Hendriks. I particularly want to recognise Ms Mitchell’s vast and outstanding contribution to the dance ensembles at Riverside. Ms Mitchell has built this reputation and standard of excellence that our current students enjoy and strive to maintain. Her innovation in choreography is nothing short of astonishing and we thank her for her unwavering passion and generosity to share this with our students and the broader community. Congratulations to all involved.

Parent/Teacher Evening

A big thank you to parents and families for attending the first of two parent/teacher evenings last night. It is always so valuable to share the progress and successes of your young person. Also, a large thank you to all of our committed teachers for staying back after a full day of teaching.

Year 10 Careers Expo and Course Counselling Interviews

As part of the course selection process, our Year 10 students went to the Western Sydney Careers Expo yesterday. They were able to meet people from universities, TAFE colleges and other training providers, as well as careers advisors and employment agencies. There was a lot of excitement as our students explored the many and varied career pathways showcased.

As the next step in the course selection process, we started our Course Counselling Interviews today. We ask each student which courses they are thinking of selecting, what career paths they are interested in and what their next steps would be. It has been great to see our students thinking of their future; both those who have a solid idea of what they want and those who have yet to decide. I look forward to the remaining interviews next week and encourage our Year 10 students to keep asking lots of questions.

Have a fantastic weekend.

Sydney Writers' Festival

Earlier this year a group of keen senior students went to the Student Sessions, a special program at the Sydney Writers Festival for high school students. It was an interesting and well selected program aimed to supplement students’ understanding of writers and the process of writing.

Student Sessions was a full-day program of engaging and lively discussions linked directly to the Stage 6 NSW English syllabus. This was a unique opportunity to hear directly from the authors of prescribed texts and to learn writing skills from some of the world’s most esteemed authors. Students were also able to participate in a Question and Answer session and to meet the authors.

The Sydney Writers' Festival has been a highlight of my High school career since year 8 and this year was no different. The insights I got from the professional poets and authors heightened my own writing and conceptual understanding of literature and the open discussion style of The Ethics Circle allowed me to participate and gain insights from my peers and fellow students. The Authors and speakers gave me a greater appreciation of the form, craft and process of writing and to greatly apply that to my own writing inside and outside of school. - Emily G Year 12
The Sydney Writers' Festival is always such an interesting and enriching event which, this year, provided helpful advice in areas such as creative fiction and poetry. The writers were a delight and a particular panel involved a very eccentric yet hilarious poet who kept his audience engaged and laughing. I for one was almost doubled over! Our study of the Shakespearean play The Merchant of Venice benefited from the Women in Shakespeare panel as the panelist referenced characters such as Ophelia and Gertrude. Overall, I highly enjoyed this year's Sydney Writers' Festival. - Anabelle S-D Year 12

Year 8 English

This term year 8 HPGE English class has been studying Shakespeare with a particular focus on the representation of women. Our introductory lessons were about engaging with the structural elements of a sonnet. We were lucky to host a practicum student in the English faculty and the class started the unit of work with an engaging collaborative creation of their own sonnets. The groups worked together, experimenting with the basic requirements of a traditional sonnet, using 14 lines, iambic pentameter and a rhyme scheme.

I really enjoyed this particular activity as we were able to use our creativity and collaborate with others to create a sonnet on our own chosen topic. This was particularly fun because we were able to incorporate dramatic elements into our sonnet reading and perform it in front of the class. - Amelia K
This activity acted as a catalyst into enhancing our thoughts on Shakespeare both in an erudite and creative way. For this activity we needed to write and perform a sonnet that we wrote with our group which was a truly pleasuring experience. Through this activity we learnt how to write sonnets and the basic rules of composing them and learnt how to put dramatic components in the nooks and crannies of our writing. - Ellie L
One of the activities we did for this unit was a group task where we wrote sonnets. Doing this activity was a very fun and engaging activity which helped to display our knowledge. I had fun collaboratively writing this with my group, which helped build on my teamwork skills and my understanding of sonnets, along with the chance to perform it for the class, which was a great opportunity to share our hard work with the class. This activity made the Shakespearean topic much more engaging and helped build on me and my classmates knowledge. - Emily H

Maths

Do the Math

On Wednesday 25th of June, the Year 10 Accelerated Mathematics class represented RGHS at the 20th annual Do the Math Event at UNSW.

Mathematics isn't just about numbers and formulas. It’s a creative and powerful tool that unlocks innovation and understanding.

The School of Maths and Stats at UNSW is passionate about mathematics and its capacity to change the world for the better. Each year, we share this passion at a flagship annual event designed for female secondary students with demonstrative capacity, talent, and interest in mathematics – Do The Maths | Empowering Women, Inspiring Futures.

Although they were some of the youngest students at the event our class was very successful in the problem solving. The were all fine representatives of our school. Their conduct and manners were exemplary. I was very proud of them. Below is an account of the day from Gabriella J.

"At the UNSW Do The Maths convention we experienced a wide range of activities including interactive and collaborative components. We were challenged to think critically and creativity about the four problems provided and find a relationship between them. We had the opportunity to ask questions to the inspiring women in maths that came to the convention, providing us with useful and insightful knowledge about their experience in maths. Overall we all greatly enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anyone interested in maths. A massive shoutout to people who provided the food, it was delicious!"

Year 7 Numeracy Day at Riverside Girls School: A Celebration of Skills and Teamwork

This year's Year 7 Numeracy Day at Riverside Girls School was filled with engaging activities that highlighted the importance of numeracy across various subjects including Geography, Music. Science, Health and Physical Education, Technological and Applied Studies. Students also enjoyed a puzzles and games in Mathematics. The day was designed to enhance their numeracy skills while collaborating with their peers through six exciting activities.

The suspense continues as the mystery number will be revealed at the next assembly! It was truly wonderful to witness the teamwork and enthusiasm displayed by all students throughout the day. A big thank you to everyone who participated and made this event a memorable experience!

From year 7 students Charli F and Bella D:

"On Tuesday, Numeracy Day was held for Year 7s at Riverside.

"We learnt how math is involved in every subject. In food tech we learnt about measurements and how to measure ingredients correctly. We made some yummy cupcakes. One of the most surprising subjects that we learnt maths was involved in was music in which we used maths to create rhythms and beats. In PDHPE we did a tiring agility test. We had to measure our distance run and the time it took us.

"It was a fun day looking at numeracy from different perspectives that we may have not even thought about. We also got to meet new people from other classes that we may have not spoken to before."

Science

Experience Engineering

This week, a group of intrepid science students from Years 7 to 9 made their way to the University of Sydney to take part in the Experience Engineering event, celebrating International Women in Engineering Day 2025.

The event, organised by Engineers Australia in collaboration with the University of Sydney and made possible through sponsorship from the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer and Transurban, aimed to inspire young minds.

The students were encouraged to think and act like engineers for the day, using both their academic knowledge and their creativity and problem-solving skills to engage in challenging activities focused on hydraulics, construction, electronics, and aviation. In the construction activity, the competition was fierce.

It is hoped that this experience——will motivate Riverside students to set high goals and pursue engaging and rewarding careers in science and engineering.

It is hoped this experience, and others like it, will motivate Riverside students to set high goals in their studies and pursue engaging and rewarding scientific careers in the future.

NAIDOC Week & Cultural Learning on Country 2025

As part of our lead-up to NAIDOC Week 2025, students participated in the Ryde Cammeray Cultural Day at the Field of Mars. This impactful on-Country learning experience provided students with a deeper understanding of the passing down of knowledge — of lore, care, hunting, weaving, and love — across generations.

The day began with a Welcome to Country, followed by a Smoking Ceremony and a powerful Didgeridoo performance, grounding students in a strong sense of culture and connection. Our first nations students held a weaving circle with staff at the FoM. Students then took part in a calm bushwalk through Sydney’s sandstone forests on Dharug Country, tuning in to the natural features significant to the Wallumedegal clan.

We also heard from Dyagula, who performed a moving song in Wiradjuri language, followed by a collaborative performance with Boronia Park Primary School, who sang a song honouring First Nations people — a powerful moment of unity.

This year marks 50 years of NAIDOC Week, with the theme “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.” It recognises the resilience and brilliance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and celebrates the bright future being shaped by emerging young leaders, grounded in the strength and wisdom of their ancestors.

Held in the first week of July, NAIDOC Week is a time for all Australians to learn about, celebrate, and support the world’s oldest living cultures. We encourage our school community to engage with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander events and activities throughout this important time.

Netball NSW Schools Cup Success!

On Wednesday, three of our netball teams represented Riverside at the Netball NSW Schools Cup held in Pennant Hills. Two teams competed in the Year 7 & 8 division, with one team representing Year 9 & 10.

Despite freezing temperatures and strong winds, all students displayed exceptional resilience, teamwork, and school spirit throughout the carnival. Their enthusiasm and support for one another were evident, making the day an enjoyable and memorable experience.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Lily A (Year 12, McKenzie House Captain), who generously gave her time to umpire throughout the day. Events like these are only possible with the help of our incredible student officials. We also acknowledge Chloe M and Evie B for assisting with umpiring duties in between their own games — your contribution is greatly appreciated.

Our Year 7 & 8 team (Blue) and our Year 9 & 10 team both finished 6th overall — a fantastic achievement and a testament to their skill and dedication.

The Sydney North Dance Festival

Our amazing Riverside Dance Company members have been performing at the Sydney North Dance Festival, at Glen Street Theatre, Belrose. Each dancer has been preparing for this performance, through weekly rehearsal since the start of Term 1. It was wonderful to see all their hard work and dedication come to life.

Riverside were fortunate to have all three items selected for presentation at the festival: Rise (Years 7 & 8); Through Endurance We Conquer (Years 8, 9 & 10); and Twilight (Years 11 & 12). The students were extremely professional and showed their commitment to excellence in Dance, alongside their remarkable team orientated approach to making each performance better than the last.

They were fabulous ambassadors for the school and did themselves proud each night. A very special mention must go to our Year 12 students who have consistently valued hard work and a commitment to the arts, and to each other. This was clearly on display as they enjoyed their final Dance Festival of their school life. Their performance was stunning, and tugged at the heart strings of many in the audience (and on stage) – there weren’t many dry eyes in the house at the end of the night!

Congratulations to Ms Mitchell and Ms Hendriks who designed and choreographed the items and guided the dancers though each performance. Thank you to our Riverside community – our family and friends – who attend the shows and support our dancers.

Congratulations also to Ella (12), Sophie (12), Charli (12), Jess (12), and Bronte (8) who additionally performed at the festival as part of the Sydney North Public Schools Senior Ensemble. These students were selected for this representative group though audition at the beginning of Term 1. They have been crafting a work through 4 workshop rehearsals with students from other high schools in our region.

It has also been a busy time for our dancers in the State Dance Ensembles – Olivia (12), Ashleigh (11), and Alena (8) – who have been performing across the various regional festival in the state.

Congratulations to all the performers, and we look forward to more dance in Terms 3 and 4!!

Volleyball Schools Cup Tournaments

A huge congratulations to our Riverside Volleyball teams this week! We participated in four Schools Cup Tournaments run by Volleyball NSW, all of which involved competing against a range of public, catholic and independent schools from across the state. Our girls showcased incredible teamwork, determination, and skill throughout the tournament, pushing each other to excel and representing Riverside with pride and passion every step of the way.

This year, we proudly entered four teams across Years 7 to 11. With a mix of wins and challenges throughout the week, a standout moment came from our incredible Year 9 team, who took home GOLD in their division - playing five tough games with no substitutes!

We are extremely proud of every participate representing Riverside and we can’t wait to compete again in Term 4!

If your daughter is interested in joining our Riverside Volleyball program, we still have spots available. Please contact the school for more information.
