porters grange weekly newsletter week ending 3rd November 2023

Nursery

This week we have had a very exciting time learning about how pumpkins grow. We have been able to get very messy, looking inside some pumpkins!!!

We have also been talking about our skeleton and made some pictures using cotton buds as our bones. We have also made our own magic potions and tried to write down our own recipes. On Friday we also spoke about Guy Fawkes night and how to stay safe.

REMINDERS:Please remember to bring a warm coat every day to nursery because we go outside in all weathers. Thank you

Reception

This week we have had lots of fun learning about autumn events. We have designed and decorated our own pumpkins! We have been learning about Guy Fawkes and how to stay safe and we have made own firework pictures. This week we started our phonics lessons and have been learning the letter sounds. In maths we have been ordering the numbers 1-5 and counting out a given amount.

REMINDERS: Please ensure your child's coat and jumper or cardigan has a name in it. Please read with your child at home at least 3 times a week. Please bring your child's reading book and reading record to school every day.

Year 1

In English we have been learning where to write a capital letter in a sentence. We have edited incorrect sentences by rewriting them and including a capital letter in the correct place. We have also been learning how to write a subtraction number sentence looking at subtraction parts. We have been learning to label a bird in science. Can you go out on a bird hunt and see what birds you can find? What features are the same between the birds you see?

REMINDER: Please refer to your SeeSaw app to find out what we are learning about in school. There will be activities each week relating to what we are learning so your child can complete these at home.

Year 2

This week in English we learned how to make our sentences more interesting by using adjectives and adverbs. We also had fun putting words in alphabetical order.

We have been learning how to subtract single-digit numbers from two-digit numbers. In PSHE we talked about what makes a great friend, identifying key attributes of a good friend. We had fun in PE, clapping and dancing to the music.

REMINDER: Remember to read at home every night. PE kits should be in on a Tuesday.

Year 3

This week Year 3 have been recalling their knowledge of the Stone Age Boy book they learnt about last half term. They are using this story to create sentences using different types of conjunctions in order to write a story. In maths, they have been continuing their learning of addition and subtraction, focusing on when they need to exchange in order to calculate their answer. In computing, they have started looking at stop frame animation, creating their own flipbook to make an image look like it is moving.

REMINDER: Please try to read at home every evening with your child and make a note of this in their home school diary.

PE is still on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure that PE kits are in school.

Year 4

This week Year 4 have been learning about play scripts and how they are set out. We have used our Anglo-Saxon story to help inspire any sentences that we are writing. In maths we have been learning to add four digit numbers in columns. This has become harder when we need to exchange between the columns. In science we have learnt more about food chains and why certain animals eat different things.

REMINDER:Remember to read at home every night and bring your reading diary into school every day.

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been getting metaphorical (metaphorically speaking) by looking at metaphor! We have begun looking at a new poem, identifying effective metaphor examples and beginning to create our own. In maths, we have been tackling factors and multiples, using our times tables to help us find common examples of each. In geography, we have begun looking at the different biomes on our planet, from the plains of the savannah, to the lush tropical rainforest of the Amazon.

REMINDER: Please strive to read and record in your home school diaries each night.

Please continue to practise times tables – they have been really useful in maths this week!

There are still some children who do not have a full PE kit. As the weather is changing, it is imperative you send your child to school with suitable PE kit ready for PE on Monday and Friday.

Year 6

This week, Year 6 have been introduced to their history topic – Crime and Punishment! In English, they explored the Shakespeare play – A Midsummer Night’s Dream and created freeze-frames of events in the play. In science, the children identified natural and man-made light sources and considered what would happen if the sun didn’t exist.

REMINDER: Please read daily and record in your home school diary. PE kit should be in school on Wednesday and Friday.

Online Safety

Artifical intelligence is a hot topic in technology and the news right now. There are many questions being raised worldwide about how AI might conceivably affect the very future of the human race. With respect to its impact on young people, the clearest risk is almost certainly the AI-powered ‘virtual friends’ which are springing up all over the internet. The following guide offers you some important information with this in mind.

Attendance

Holiday Requests

Holidays taken during term-time will not be authorised, so please bear this in mind when making your booking. We would expect that holidays are booked during the school holiday dates. School term dates are available on the school website and printed copies are in the main foyer.

Appointments and Absence Requests

We encourage parents/carers to make appointments out of school hours where possible. Where this is not possible, the child should be out of school for a minimum amount of time, coming back to school after the appointment or attending school before the appointment and returning after it has taken place, if appropriate to do so. Attending an appointment during term-time will be counted as authorised as long as the school is notified in advance and evidence of the appointment is provided. Evidence can be shown by way of an appointment letter, card, text message or email. Please show this to the school office or email a copy to the attendance email address in advance of the appointment.

Requests for other absences can be made in two ways, 1) you can complete a Pupils Absence Request via our online form found on our website or 2) you can complete the request on a paper form that is available from the front office. All requests are review by our Principal. As a school se would expect that for any planned pupil absence, that parents have informed the school in advance. For many instances we can authorise an absence that we have been informed about. If we are not able to authorise the absence, we will note the reason of the absence so that it can be considered as part of the school’s pupil absence review and fixed penalty notice for absences process.

Reporting Absence

If your child is absent for any reason, you should let the school know by telephoning 01702 468 047 (option 1) on the morning of the absence. Please provide your child's name, class and reason for absence. Please also keep us updated if the absence continues into the following day.
