Headteacher's Message

Mr A Moloney, Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

I do hope you and your families are well?

There are now only five weeks left before we break for the summer holidays, (Friday 18th July at 3.15pm), and we are busy preparing for the end of the academic year and the new one, which will begin on Tuesday 2nd September at 9.00am for our pupils. We are having to revert to our usual finishing time of 3.15pm on Friday 18th July, as transport teams are having difficulty staffing their teams for an earlier finish that day.

We have planned for a range of activities for pupils in these last 5 weeks; activities for pupils to celebrate their successes this year. Other events include:

  • June 17th Careers Morning KS4 and KS5
  • June 20th KS4 Visit to the MMU Art degree show
  • June 27th Leavers’ Mass and Celebration
  • July 3rd and 4th D of E Expedition
  • July 11th Sports afternoon at Longford Park
  • July 14th Class end of year Trips
  • July 16th End of Year Masses 9.30am (KS4/5) and 11.15am (KS3)

Next week additionally, our KS3 Cricket team are representing the school at a SEND Cricket competition at Middleton Cricket Club, we have footballers in a tournament representing ‘City in the Community’, KS4 pupils have a work experience day at the Manchester Museum and pupils in KS4 and 5 are busy preparing for their Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. Another busy week ahead at SJV.

On Friday 27th June we will have our leavers’ service and celebration for the pupils who officially leave us on this day. It will be a sad occasion in many ways, but we will certainly celebrate pupil achievements with them, before they leave. We also start our transition work for September in the next few weeks, when we welcome into School the parents of pupils who will join SJV in September. We look forward to welcoming the children and their parents who begin their journey with us at SJV.

The collation of our annual reports is now taking place and we are planning to send the pupils' report home to you week beginning 7th July.

Finally congratulations to Megan, who’s Andy Warhol inspired self portrait has been recognised in the national Unique Art Awards competition. A huge recognition for her really impressive and talented work. Well done Megan and Mrs Wood.

It continues to be a busy time for all in school and we appreciate, as always, the positive behaviour and cooperation of our pupils and the continued support of their parents and carers.

Best wishes for the weekend.

Highlights of the Week

Our Catholic School

Our spiritual focus this week, Jesus said:

'If you love me, keep my commandments. A new commandment I give you; is to love one another as I have loved you.'

- John 13:34

Within our Catholic school, we continue celebrating as a staff through weekly reflection and Mass, sharing God's love, comfort and support with one another. Our weekly Chaplaincy meetings are continuing well and it is great to see so many pupils attending our voluntary Mass for pupils.

Class 10 enjoyed their visit to the Hidden Gem church, as part of the 2025 Jubilee Year 'Pilgrims of Hope'. Within the rest of the school, we continued looking at world-wide religions. Our students enjoy choosing topics that they would like to know more about, allowing our children and young people to be in control of their own learning.

Poetry Corner

Congratulations to our poet in residence Oliver Lomax who has just won the Los Angeles International Poetry Film Prize!

Oliver said, "I’m still a little overwhelmed and shocked to have won, much gratitude to our wondrous Composer - Pete Whitfield, Videographer - Jan Koblanski, and Film Editor - Nicole Williamson".

Also, importantly to the local folk who spoke to me at the site, it is their stories and generosity that shaped this piece. Their voices have travelled from Little Hulton to LA and I could not be any prouder.

It’s vital that our young poets here at SJV see that working-class voices and stories occupy an important space in the poetry world.
