From the classroom to the trading floor

Our share traders 'Ring the Bell' at the ASX in Sydney

Last week, Byron Bay High School’s share traders received an invitation to attend the annual ‘Ringing of the Bell for Financial Literacy’ at the Australian Securities Exchange in Sydney.

This prestigious event involved students from top performing schools in the ASX Sharemarket Game, participating in the ringing of the bell to open the ASX market session at 9:59 am. They also participated in valuable presentations from ASX market experts and in question and answer sessions about the markets.

Byron Bay High School students, when invited to the 'Ringing of the Bell', occupied 7 of the top 10 positions in the national Sharemarket Game, and 2 of the top 3 podium places.

BBHS students Jude, Stella and Kian were outstanding representatives of our school; making the most of their opportunities to experience the financial markets, speak with experts and other student traders, and to learn more about trading in general - a valuable skill that will set them up for future success.

Byron Bay High School’s position as a leading school in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game was reaffirmed at the ASX 'Ringing the Bell' Ceremony. This national competition that provides our students with a unique set of real-world financial literacy skills in trading financial securities.

We are immensely proud of the very high level of success of our students!

The Lighthouse Patch blooms

Thanks to our dedicated boys!

Our Year 7 and 8 Garden Crew have been working tirelessly, transforming a large area of disused grass, into a thriving micro flower farm! 'The Lighthouse Patch' is currently in full spring bloom, flowering with Anemone, Ranunculus, Statice, Strawflowers, Sea Mist, Nigella, Cosmos, Sweet Pea, Carnation, Marigold, Zinnia and Dahlias.

It has been a labour of love (and many hours of hard work!), with students moving huge amounts of soil and mulch.

All the flowers seen in these photos were grown from seed and nourished tenderly to become these gorgeous blooms! Last week students harvested the flowers and learnt how to create beautifully sensitive flower arrangements. 15 stunning bunches were delivered with great pride and joy to the office and were swiftly purchased by our school community.

We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all those who supported our students in successfully selling out of their first orders and making this little flower farms’ dreams come true!

From the Agriculture Plot

Meet our cheeky chickens!

Our school’s chickens have quickly become the stars of the yard! With their lively personalities and curious antics, they keep us entertained every day. But these busy birds aren’t just fun to watch—they’ve also been hard at work laying plenty of fresh, free-range eggs.

Thanks to their efforts, our Hens Club students have been able to sell some delicious free-range eggs at the school office for $8 a dozen. Whenever they are available, we'll drop a carton or 2 into the basket on the office counter. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy fresh, local produce while supporting our school community.

Our bees have also been busy!

Poster made by Reggie (Year 8) from the BBHS Bee Club

Our hardworking bees have been buzzing away, and we’re excited to announce that honey sales will be starting again soon! Fresh, raw, chemical free honey will be available for purchase from the school office beginning mid next week.

Be sure to grab a jar of this liquid gold for $10 (while stocks last) and support our school’s wonderful bee program!

BBHS 2025 Musical: Firebringer

Production time is here!

Off the glittery coattails of last year’s 1950s musical 'Curtains', we take you back to the dawn of time as we know it – right back to the Stone Age.

Firebringer is a satirical musical theatre production, portraying life in the prehistoric era, as humankind first struggled to get their minds around what it is to live harmoniously with nature and with each other.

Join in the fun of following our tribe of loveable characters, seeing just how far we’ve come … and how many lessons we may still have to learn!

Empathy and self-reflection reigns for both characters and audience alike, as we admit to some hard truths, and witness unashamed expressions of what it means to be human!

This family-friendly show is being staged in the BBHS PAC.

Tickets are on sale now! Get in quick - seats in the PAC are limited.

Byron Bay Film Festival

Students dive into the world of film

Today, Thursday 23 October, our English faculty organised an exciting excursion to the High School Program of the Byron Bay Film Festival at Palace Cinemas. Featuring a diverse selection of 9 short films, specially curated with themes relevant to young people, the program showcased stories from overseas, across Australia, and our very own local region.

This fantastic experience gave our students the chance to expand their imaginations, develop their film studies skills, and explore the growing career opportunities within the filmmaking and arts industries. It was a day of inspiration and creativity for all involved!

Po’ Poetry

Celebrating women’s voices at BBHS

Po’ Poetry is a BBHS English faculty initiative designed to showcase poetry and student writing by women, for women.

Soon, on the back of every girls’ toilet door (just Senior girls at the moment) there will be a poem or a piece of writing written by a woman, sometimes even a student from this school.

Words of wisdom, empowerment, celebration and truth.

Here are two examples of student writing from our Year 12 cohort:

First Nations Homework Club

Our Homework Club is a fantastic, free opportunity for First Nations students to strengthen their learning, build confidence, and achieve their best. Held in the Library every Monday afternoon from 3:40 pm to 4:40 pm, the club provides a quiet, supportive space equipped with all the resources you need to succeed.

By taking part, you’ll be contributing to the important goal of closing the gap in education outcomes — while developing strong study habits, confidence, and pride in your learning journey.

You’ll be supported by a highly skilled Maths tutor, two experienced English teachers with almost 30 years of combined expertise, and a dedicated HSIE teacher specialising in Years 7–10. With enough notice, we can also arrange specialty tutors to support specific subjects or assignments.

Please note that transport is not provided, and students will need to be picked up after the session or make their own way home.

New Social Media Age Restrictions

From 10 December 2025, Australian law changes the rules for anyone under 16 using social media

Image courtesy of the ABC BTN

CTRL SHFT has provided a downloadable, short, student-friendly guide explains exactly what’s happening, why it matters, and what you can do right now to protect your content and your digital rights. This guide helps students, parents, and educators understand the new national minimum-age requirements for platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube, and X (Twitter) and more.

It breaks down the law in plain language no jargon, no fear, just facts.

Students will learn:

  • Which platforms are affected and why accounts will be removed for under-16s.
  • How age-verification and facial-age estimation work (and what their privacy options are).
  • The difference between deletion and deactivation.
  • How to download and keep photos, videos, and messages before accounts disappear.
  • How to challenge a wrong age decision or report a platform that isn’t following the rules.
  • Their ongoing rights to privacy, safety, and respect online.

Give your child the knowledge and confidence to navigate the new law safely. Download, print, or share the guide and help make the online world fairer, safer, and easier to understand:
