Reading Girls' School newsletter - 9 february 2024

Principal's message:

This week saw a large number of our girls participating in wider enrichment activities. Our Year 7s Personal Development Day saw them participate in a number of workshops. This was followed by them engaging in Science Week.

Finally last night a number of our girls with their families attended The Abbey School to speak to local entrepreneurs, as part of ARCH, which brings together individuals and organisations across Reading to offer opportunities and learning experiences to young people and young women in particular. Our students were inspired by the keynote speaker Sir John Madejski. As many of you may be aware, he is a businessman, brought up in Reading, with commercial interests spanning property, broadcast media, hotels, restaurants, publishing and football. He founded Auto Trader, but also, he was the chairman of Reading Football Club. As you heard him speak it was evident that taking RFC to the premier league, brought him great pride.

It was really impressive to see so many of our students attend the evening, and making the most of the opportunity. I would encourage you to take advantage of the next event, taking place at The Abbey School on Thursday 22 February at 17.00, which is a talk by the famous sports presenter – Clare Balding CBE. Places can be reserved via this eventbrite link. As before, this is a 'sign up and show up' event and students in Year 9 or below should have an adult chaperone (parents are more than welcome).

As we come to the end of this half term – a short, but busy one, I wish to encourage all students of their free time exploring new opportunities whether that is visiting somewhere of interest in Reading, visiting the many free sights in London, or simply doing something creative.

I wish the Year 11s good luck when they return, as they undertake their second mock exams. I know that all their teachers have been supporting them with their revision, and it is imperative that they set aside some time during the half term week to revise, in order to set themselves up to succeed.

Year 7 Personal Development

The Year 7s had their first Personal Development Event this week.

REach and REinspired had them debating what makes a good neighbour and considering how they can help others. With HealthReach they thought about what makes a healthy relationship and the qualities needed for a good relationship.

The Museum of English Rural Life visited with a young scientist from the University of Reading and gave the year 7s a STEM project to work on in their STEM lessons considering what item used today they would put into a museum of the future.

The Year 7s were also taught some first aid skills, and were energised by practicing CPR on dummies.

The first week back after half term the touring drama group Upfront will be visiting the school, and Year 9, for their annual drama production. The play explores themes of relationships, as part of the PSHE curriculum.

House Challenge

On Thursday morning, year 7s participated in a science house challenge to build the tallest tower which could also suspend the largest mass.

The students only had a finite number of resources and 45 minute to build their tower so they had to work together, communicate effectively and build their towers quickly to meet the deadline. It was great to see all of our year 7 girls engaged and some towers ranged from tall and spindly to smaller, squatter towers.

You could feel the competitive edge, especially during the last few moments where every was scrambling together to finish their towers on time. The tallest tower reached an impressive 180 cm whilst the heaviest mass suspended was a whopping 1.2 kg!

Well done to everyone though for their innovative ideas.

Year 11 Netball

Our Y11 netballers had their last ever fixtures for RGS. They were helped out by some Y9 and Y8 students so we had enough subs. Thank you for your 5 years of commitment to the PE Department.

Year 10 Netball

Y10 had some very close matches. They battled hard with some excellent attacking and defensive play and have qualified for the finals after half term.

After half term, Netball club on Monday will only be for students selected for the Y7, Y8 and Y9 netball teams so they can prepare for their leagues.

Lunchtime badminton clubs will go on pause for the first three weeks back due to exams in the Sports Hall.

Please check posters in PE for club information.
