Year 11 Business trip to The Museum of Brands & Warner Bros. Studio Tours Harry Potter World

So after the coach being slightly delayed arriving, we finally piled on and headed to Notting Hill.

The Museum of Brands is amazing. Nestled between residential houses and offices, a white fascia sticks out and it’s really not where you’d expect a museum to be. It is literally a walk through time from the 1900’s right up until modern day. As we headed through the Time Tunnel we saw the millions of items of all things, and everything, from clothing to homeware, original vinyl records and teen magazines, to toys, games & books and as we got to the more recent decades we all started spotting items that we recognised from either parents/grandparents having in their homes and then things we had or do still own ourselves. Explaining to some of the students what you did with a portable TV was amusing (no we haven’t always had smartphones & tablets you know!!)

The Brand Hall was fascinating, to see how some of the big brand names have barely change in over a hundred years, where others have reinvented themselves constantly to keep up with a current look and aesthetic.

A little garden at the back of the museum was the setting for lunch before we headed to Watford and the Harry Potter studios at Leavesden.

What can I say about the Harry Potter studios, except WOW!! The classroom lesson – The Business of Movies was just brilliant and such an insight into the marketing of such a massive franchise as the Harry Potter series and a great opportunity for our Business students to have experienced. And we were very lucky to see, up close, some of the props & costumes used in the movie that the general public will never see. Then of course we were able to take the studio tour, which in itself is a feat of marketing genius that is on a scale that really is magical. Even if you’re not a Harry Potter fan there is something to entertain everyone, even if only for the remarkable cafes/coffee shops and food courts that sell some movie worthy treats. (and there might have been the odd broomstick ride by a couple of members of staff too!!)

It was a fabulous day, and I think all who went had a great time, the students' behaviour was exemplary and they where a credit to themselves and BCS, and a pleasure to spend the day with.

Artist of the Week

This week we have an illustration created by Lajna Latif in year 10. Lajna joined Baylis Court School in November 2023. She has worked tremendously hard this year having joined us later in the year developing her drawing outcome inspired by the work artist Iain Macarthur. She has combined her drawing of a self-portrait with patterns from various cultures. Well done!
