There are lots of improvements happening across campus – take a quick look at what’s going on.
West Slope
Construction of our new Health and Wellbeing Centre and new student accommodation continues to make progress.
Two accommodation blocks on the north end of the site are starting to rise and these will be ready for students in 2026.
Our new Health and Wellbeing Centre will put your wellbeing at the heart of campus. It will be home to University Wellbeing Services and NHS GP services, and will dedicated even more spaces to these vital services.
Last week, the Students’ Union joined the West Slope team for a tour of the construction site to get a first glimpse of these new student facilities. The first stop was a look around the new Health and Wellbeing Centre, which also has student accommodation on the top couple of floors, and then a large student accommodation block. Although under construction still, you can get a real sense of the look and feel of West Slope – from large accommodation windows to three floors of dedicated wellbeing space, good things are coming!
Remember, large construction vehicles regularly use campus roads, so please take extra care when moving around campus and use designated routes.
Watch our latest ‘SeagullPOV’ video to see West Slope taking shape. Made using drone footage taken on the morning of the Students’ Union site tour by our construction partners Balfour Beatty. Watch to see the new Health and Wellbeing Centre and student accommodation under construction, as well as the footprint of many more buildings to come.
Valentines at Sussex: events and drop-in
The Better Campus team were in the Student Centre last week for Valentines celebration, sharing the love for our campus and offering students an exciting preview of the Health and Wellbeing Centre, set to open next year.
We asked students what they love most about campus and received a great range of answers, from the beauty of Stanmer Park and the South Downs to favourite study spots like the Library and bustling cafés such as ACCA Café and IDS.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our surveys last term – the lucky prize winners have been contacted.
Passionate about sustainability? Find out what happens next as we set about creating a new Travel Plan for campus to encourage sustainable travel.
Our Student Spaces Survey results are in – Eat Central topped the charts as your favourite place to eat, you consistently agree that more outdoor seating would be great for study, as well as more quiet indoor study spaces, and your top priorities when shopping are price, location and convenience.
Art Installation around West Slope is now complete
We’ve installed even more artwork to the fence line surrounding the West Slope site as part of our ongoing project to bring together illustrations, paintings, drawings and photography from current students, staff and alumni at Sussex. Head down towards the Student Centre to take a look and celebrate the talent in our community.
Some standout contributions include striking photographs of Sussex students in their indigenous attire by PhD student Tunde Alabi-Hundeyin II, astrophotography by Physics and Astronomy Lecturer Dr. Darren Baskill, and beautifully detailed illustrations of local wildlife by Saskia Lewis.
Help solve sustainability challenges
Join collaborative sessions, and explore ideas to solve key sustainability challenges and feed directly into the design and development of the University's sustainability solutions.
If you have ideas on how we can tackle issues in areas such as biodiversity, how we recycle, repair, and reuse, how we travel to campus and the food we consume come along to one of our two sessions.

Ditch the disposables and a call for Eco Champions
Last year, we managed to recycle a third of the waste produced on campus, but we want to get that total closer to 50% by the end of 2025.
One way to reduce waste is by asking everyone to bring their own cup when buying hot drinks on campus. You’ll save 20p every time you bring your own cup to a Sussex Uni Food café, and if you pay £3.95 to be part of the returnable cup scheme you can swap your cup for a token any time to avoid carrying it around. Plus your first coffee is absolutely free!
We’re also looking for Eco Champions who can spare an hour to encourage others to recycle using our new bank of bins in Eat central, or spend an hour explaining the benefits of ditching the disposables and using their own cup.
To get involved, email sustainable@sussex.ac.uk and we’ll send you all the information.
