Heart Health Month
Maeve Guidera - MBA, RDN, LDN
Did you know that what you eat has a great impact on heart health? February is Heart Month where the focus is on educating the risks of heart disease and preventative measures. Heart-healthy living involves understanding your risk factors, making healthy choices, and taking steps to reduce your chances of getting heart disease. Knowing that lifestyle and diet have a large impact on health and cardiovascular disease in particular, it is important to begin education so that students may develop habits in support of their health.
Studies have linked increased fat intake to an increased risk of heart disease. It’s important to note that not all fat is created equal. Opt for unsaturated fats, such as olive oil and avoid over consumption of saturated fats such as butter.
Throughout February, Dietitian Maeve developed messaging for students to educate them on cardiovascular disease and how they can reduce their risk in developing later in life. To bridge the gap and help the students put their learnings into practice, Dietitian Maeve highlighted the benefits of different offerings in Miley Café. Featuring the pop-ups during Heart Month showcased how different nutrients in our menus can positively impact heart health.
It is customary during Lent to abstain from consuming meat such as beef, pork, or chicken on specific days during the Lenten Season. For example, Catholics abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday in addition to all Fridays during Lent. On these days, Catholics generally opt for Fish. In observance of Lent, fish is served during all Fridays in Lent in Miley Café. Fish offers a variety of nutritional benefits in support of heart health. In addition, we also linked our Lent practices to Heart Health Month by discussing the benefits of fish.

Green Restaurant Association
Miley Café is proud to be a 3-Star Certified Green Restaurant! The Green Restaurant Association is a national nonprofit dedicated to making restaurants more sustainable. Restaurants generate more than 300 million tons of garbage every year. To make matters worse, much of this waste is made from polystyrene foam, which does not decompose over time.
Miley Café works towards changing these trends by reducing waste, eliminating the use of polystyrene foam, and implementing a wide array of environmental steps to conserve energy and water. Additionally, it supports reducing material and food waste as well as the excessive use of disposables, chemicals, and more. Miley Café has earned 176.97 GreenPoints under the Green Restaurant Association’s rigorous standards. We aim to continue to increase this number by continuing to execute and develop these practices. Salve SGA Food Committee
We are proud to work alongside the Salve Regina Student Government Association Food Committee to incorporate and implement student ideas into our dining program. We meet with SGA every other week to discuss feedback and ideas and to create strong and manageable action plans to follow through on these initiatives.
Celebrating RA Appreciation Day
We are extremely grateful for all of the work that the housing department does to create a positive, inclusive, educational, and transformative college experience here at Salve. We celebrated RA Appreciation Day on Wednesday, February 21 by delivering a card and some candy to the student housing staff in Walgreen Hall. While we sent a thank you card on this day, we want to ensure that our RA's and housing staff are appreciated every day for their tireless efforts here at Salve.
Happy or Not
Feedback is imperative to our program, and we are happy to be getting detailed, real-time feedback on our program in Miley Café using our Happy or Not kiosks, currently located at the Mongolian Grill station and the Front Desk. Students are encouraged to rate their dining experience, choose the strengths and weaknesses in their service, and leave open feedback that Sodexo managers can review and use to make impactful changes as quickly as possible.

National Employee Appreciation Day
Friday, March 1
#ThankstoThem
Our team truly is the spark! We are extremely appreciative of our staff's hard work, dedication, and passion towards service. In the past few years, we have been hard at work improving our dining program, and we could have never come as far as we have without our resident and retail dining team's day-to-day work. We have put an emphasis on Pride in Food and Pride in Service, and this shows in guest feedback and student satisfaction.
This National Employee Appreciation Day, we gifted each of our staff members a gift bag with sweets, treats, a personal Thank You card, and more! We spoke with staff members at our team huddles to express our gratitude and appreciation. This year specifically, we have implemented a great deal of change in our program, and we wanted our staff to know that their tireless efforts do not go unnoticed.
Our National Employee appreciation Day mascot, Ned, was brought along for the festivities as a fun photo opportunity and a way to get employees excited.
While we appreciate the hard work that our team puts in each day, we wanted to do something extra special on National Employee Appreciation Day to express our gratitude and pride in their efforts.
