Boarder of the week
Our boarder of the week is Jack for his excellent consistency throughout the term. Always with a cheeky little smile and positive character around the boarding house, he is such a crucial member of the boarding house because of the brilliant attributes.
Hatherop's Big Bake Off
We were overwhelmed with the response to our Big Bake off house competition, thank you so much to all the children who took part. All the children were awarded equal amounts of house points for taking part but the catering team did choose a selection of winners.

Pre-Prep
Reception
What a busy term we have had in Reception! This week we have been learning about Easter and discussing the signs of Spring we can see all around us. We wrote a poem about Spring using our five senses. We thought hard about all the things that we can see (lambs playing and yellow daffodils), hear (cows mooing), smell (hot cross buns), taste (yummy chocolate!) and touch (fluffy chicks) and worked hard to write our ideas down as a poem. We have also been busy making Easter cards (don’t forget to check your bookbags) and we were blown away by all the Easter craft that was brought in for the end of term competition! Well done for all your hard work.
Our new topic next term is Powerful Poetry, based on the children’s anthology of poetry called ‘Here’s a Little Poem’ collected by Jane Yolen and Andrew Fusek Peters. We will be focusing on a poem a week, and reading additional stories to complement our learning. We will be reading lots of the poems in the books throughout the term, and seeing if we can spot any rhyming words or alliteration. If you have a favourite poem, please bring it in after the holidays so that we can share them together! In the first week back after Easter, we will also be looking at 2D and 3D shapes in Maths.
We have put some home learning challenges in your bookbags for over the holidays. These are optional, and you can pick and choose the activities that interest you the most. We would love to see what you got up to over the holidays- please feel free to post on Tapestry so we can see your amazing home learning! We hope you all have a wonderful Easter break.
Prep 1
This final week of term has seen Prep 1 culminate their Wild learning with some fantastic, creative activities both within and outside of the classroom. In English the children have risen to the challenge of becoming authors, editors, illustrators and publishers, producing their own beautiful books which they are desperate to share! They impressed us at each stage, becoming the girl and using ambitious vocabulary to describe how she was feeling, adding a blurb and front cover and giving each other supportive feedback. The children have been so inspired, that they may wish to produce other books over the Easter break. Please see the attached document which gives instructions as to how to turn an A3 page into a book!
In Maths this week, we have been focusing on place value to 50. The children have learnt that it is more efficient to count objects by grouping them into tens and ones and have demonstrated excellent understanding of how to partition two digit numbers, helped in part by our ‘Number of the Day’ learning that is tackled every morning in the classroom. The children later applied this understanding by estimating numbers on a number line and number square, identifying the numbers 1 more and 1 less and 10 more and 10 less. Please see the learning ideas that we have sent home for fun ideas and games which will support your child in familiarising themselves with place value to 100!
In Topic lessons this week, the children loved opportunities both in the forest and Stable Yard, to earn a Bear Grylls survival badge for ‘Never giving up! in a series of Scout challenges. They had a fantastic time making fires, camouflaging their faces, tying knots, making dens and transporting water over obstacles. It has been great fun and a fantastic opportunity to develop teambuilding skills, something this year group are particularly brilliant at. To mark Easter, our final STEM challenge of the term has been the Egg Drop Challenge! This week the children were challenged to find the most effective way of protecting their egg, before it was dropped from the top of the play equipment. A messy but exciting end to a super term!
Prep 2
In Prep 2 this week, we have completed our Victorian topic and study of the Moth story. In comparison to the pollution caused by the Industrial revolution we explored the current global problems linked to looking after our planet. In particular we learnt about Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough and how their conservation work has influenced the world. In response to this, we explored how to write a ‘tweet’ and learnt about how a profile page is laid out. Prep 2 then thought about a question they might like to ask Greta Thunberg linked to the work she has done and is campaigning to improve and protect our planet. We were most impressed with the questions the children came up with, for example, What made you decide to miss school?, What inspired you to save the Earth? Do you have any advice for me on caring for the environment?
In our maths sessions this week, we have brought together all our new knowledge about units of measure through an Easter Maths activity entitled “The Mystery of the Easter Bonnet Competition”. The name of the winner was missing from the envelope, so the children were split into teams to work through each of the clues which required them to find the missing measurements, read measurements in grams, compare and order measurements, measure temperatures and measure in centimetres which then led them to the final clues to work out who won the easter bonnet competition. The children worked really well and had to read each clue and task very carefully.
We hope you all have a wonderful Easter!
Prep School
What is it like to be a bird?
Prep 3 have been using the book ‘What it’s like to be a Bird’ for their English lessons. They have been working so hard on various English techniques to support their learning, using this narrative non-fiction text. Most recently, they have all researched and created their own spread page about a chosen bird. The children have used the same style of writing as the author, Tim Birkhead, and the illustrator, Catherine Rayner. Have a look at prep 3s beautiful spreads using the link below. They even helped create a front cover and blub together as a team. How fabulous is their artwork and facts?
All about Asia
There was great excitement in Prep 4 today as the children brought in their Asia Homework projects – the culmination of work at home over the last 5 weeks, the children were so keen to share what they had done – we had 3-dimensional yurts, complete with carpeted walls, replicas of the Great Wall of China made out of wood, dioramas of pandas and their habitats, models of Mount Fuji and Mount Everest and so much more. An amazing afternoon was spent sharing these wonderful pieces – lots of confident presenting to their year group and asking and answering of questions – this truly was the Adventure of Childhood in action!
In Maths it has been all about fractions – we have been looking at mixed numbers, proper fractions and improper fractions – we started the topic with some practical real-life examples using cake which was great fun!
In English we have been using our Storytellers tent to hear more stories from Asia. We have then written elfje poems about water, then recorded ourselves reading them, we have also been writing letters and retelling a story using lots of detail to make it exciting and appealing! Look out for our poem on water on our social media channels.
Our Science lessons involved investigating the best ketchup to use for hot dogs – lots of scientific terminology and investigating the properties of liquids- lots of team work and practical skills being shown.
When we come back after Easter, we will be learning more about the Water Cycle. We would love you to have a go at creating your own water cycle by making a Terrarium. This video explains a little more and gives you some simple instructions to follow.
If you do manage to make one, please bring your terrarium into school on the first day of term.
Derin's Big Tidy Up
A very big well done to Derin in Prep 7 who did his bit for the National litter picking campaign this weekend and collected 3.5 dustbin bags full of litter in 1.5 hours from the verges around Hatherop and Coln. Let's see just how much litter we can collect as a community over the Easter holidays and keep our local areas tidy and clean.
Prep 6 & 7 have rocked the PAC this week
Huge well done to all the children in Prep 6 & 7 who performed We Will Rock You this week to parents and loved ones. It was so wonderful to see them having so much fun on stage and as always, very well done to Mr Page for coordinating the children so well.
