Svalbard Winter 14 - 22 March 2022

Day 1 & 2 – 14 & 15 March 2022 We started our first Svalbard winter expedition since 2019 with an international group of 12 photographers from Europe, Mexico and Australia. In the afternoon we sat our course north, and during the two first days we experience exceptional warm temperatures of 5 degree Celsius and rain.

Day 3 – 16 March 2022 Finally on day 3 the temperature started to drop and we got minus degrees and better light and weather conditions.

Day 4 – 17 March 2022 We continued to the northwestern corner of Spitsbergen and had some nice landscape photo opportunities with snow covered mountains and drifting sea ice in the fjords.

Day 5 – 18 March 2022 We spent this day in Woodfjorden, with windy conditions in the morning, but calm and nice sunset in the evening.

Day 6 – 19 March 2022 We spent the whole day in Raudfjorden. With the recent warm weather about 2/3 of the fjord ice was gone. Two polar bears were observed in this area and one of them approached our zodiac walking along the edge of the frozen beach.

Day 7 – 20 March 2022 On our way back south we had a stop in Johnsonfjorden with some nice sea ice and light conditions. The only wildlife we could see were a few seals in the distance.

Day 8 – 21 March 2022 We spent our last full day in Isfjorden visiting some of the fjords, with some nice landscape opportunities. It was also time for a group picture of the great international group attending this expedition.

Our first Svalbard Winter expedition of 2022 was challenging regarding weather and wind conditions, but we had some really good landscape and wildlife photo opportunities during the expedition. It was also a big relief to finally run Svalbard expeditions after a long time with Covid-19 restrictions.

Let us know if you want to travel with us on a similar photo expedition to Svalbard.
