Personal Statement

  • Sunghee Min is a public artist based in Roseville, Minnesota. Originally from rural South Korea, she studied sculpture and installation art at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Since relocating to Minnesota in 2016, Min has focused on creating outdoor public sculptures that engage diverse audiences across the Midwest. Working primarily with metal—especially manufactured steel sheets, bars, and structural forms—her sculptures often explore geometric shapes like triangles and squares. These simple, universal forms reflect Min’s interest in the connection between structure, nature, and community. Her work is inspired by the potential of public art to transcend personal experience and resonate with broader audiences in public spaces. Min’s sculptures have been exhibited widely in outdoor sculpture walks and exhibitions across Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Illinois. She has received awards and grants, including the Artists’ Future Grant in 2024 -2025 from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council and the Creative Support for Individuals Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board in 2024. Her public commissions include works for the City of Madison, WI, and Rochester, MN. Through her work, Sunghee Min continues to explore themes of connectivity, simplicity, and the power of geometric form to invite reflection and dialogue within the public space.

Sculpture Statement

  • “Greeting Tower II” is a welded stainless-steel sculpture inspired by the ancient totem poles found across many cultures. Traditionally, totem poles act as symbolic landmarks—marking places of significance, conveying shared stories, and welcoming visitors. This sculpture embodies that spirit, offering a quiet presence that invites engagement, reflection, and discovery. The gleaming vertical column is constructed from countless identical triangular plates, meticulously welded in a precise and meditative process. Each four-triangle unit forms an inverted pyramid, which is then repeated and stacked to create the sides of the rectangular column. This labor-intensive and repetitive construction not only defines the sculpture’s form, but also reflects a contemplative process of accumulation. “Greeting Tower II” seeks to evoke a sense of presence. It offers viewers a moment of pause, orientation, and connection within the surrounding space.
