Dear University community,

There’s a hint of Fall in the air, but we’ve got a busy week ahead for you.

  • Tomorrow, we’ll present last week’s rain-delayed University Convocation from 3 – 4 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. We’ll present TAMIU’s Innovador Award to Evelyn Summers and her husband, the late Carroll E. Summers, Jr., as well as our 2023 faculty awards and the State of the University address. Please join us.
  • TAMIU students can attend a special morning performance of the Laredo Theatre Guild International’s production of “Frankenstein” on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 9 a.m. The play runs for approximately 2 hours with a final 30-minute Q&A with the actors on stage at the end of the play. To attend this limited-capacity performance, TAMIU students must make reservations online at https://go.tamiu.edu/ltgi-frankenstein-tix. Remember, Frankenstein runs through Oct. 15 and all TAMIU students are admitted free of charge to regular evening performances as long as they have a valid student ID.
  • Join Proyecto Amigo Wednesday, Oct. 11 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Career Services Office, Student Center 114, for the “Who is on your professional team? Learn how to find mentors who can guide you in your college and career Workshop.” RSVP here. Proyecto Amigo is a new program for TAMIU undergraduate students to promote community and belonging in addition to providing mentorship opportunities to increase Dustdevil retention and graduation rates.
  • The IBC Bank and Commerce Bank 2023-2024 Keynote Speaker Series is Wednesday and features Dr. Marcus Noland, executive vice president and director of studies for the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He’ll present his lecture titled "Asia in the Global Economy: Implications for the United States and the World." The lecture is at 6 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
  • On Thursday from 2 – 3 p.m., we’re celebrating October Energy Awareness Month with a unique event – solar smoothies for students. We’ll be sharing smoothies made with blenders powered by the sun in the Breezeway between Dr. F. M. Canseco Hall and Anthony J. and Georgia A. Pellegrino Hall. This is part of the Conserve My Planet IGNITE program which aims to educate students about the importance of solar power, energy efficiency, and resource stewardship.
  • Also Thursday, it’s the Graduate School Open House from 5 – 7 p.m. Explore what’s next for you….and participate in a $2,000 Scholarship Giveaway. Find out more.
  • On Friday, we welcome our Reading the Globe Program Fall 2023 Campus Common Read author Marie Mutsuki Mockett for a lecture at noon in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall. Her novel, Where the Dead Pause, and the Japanese Say Goodbye, is a memoir examining her grief against the backdrop of the 2011 Great East Earthquake in Japan. First Year Students can apply for selection as an RTG Ambassador by taking part in an essay competition to join a study abroad trip to Japan this Spring 2024. Don’t miss out.
  • On Saturday, join our Annual Partial Solar Eclipse Watch Party on the front lawn of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library. Don’t forget your eye protection! Here’s details.
  • And just ahead…Maroon Madness on Oct. 17, Make a Difference Day on Oct. 21, TAMIU Athletics Trick or Treat Oct. 28, our Halloween Fest Oct. 30 and the 2023 Walk to End Alzheimer’s on campus Nov. 4.

LTGI’s 'Frankenstein' Showing at TAMIU's CFPA Oct. 6 - 15

Laredo Theater Guild International, in cooperation with TAMIU, will present its new production of Frankenstein with performances Oct. 6 – 15 in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre. TAMIU’S 2023 Innovador Award to Recognize Summers Couple for Lasting Educational Impact

The 2023 TAMIU Innovador Award will be presented to Evelyn Summers and her husband, the late Carroll E. Summers, Jr. at TAMIU’s Fall 2023 Convocation Ceremony. TAMIU’s Innovador Award was created in 2018 to recognize individuals or organizations making a lasting impact on education, particularly higher education, in Laredo and the South Texas region.

IBC Bank and Commerce Bank Keynote Speaker Series Scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 11

The upcoming talk by Dr. Marcus Noland, titled "Asia in the Global Economy: Implications for the United States and the World" is free and open to the public. The lecture will also be streamed via Microsoft Teams.

TAMIU Graduate School Open House Set for Thursday, Oct. 12

It’s time to take the next step in your education. Meet with program advisors and faculty during our Graduate School Open House Thursday, Oct. 12! Join us at our Open House for your chance to receive a $2,000 scholarship. We’re also waiving our Graduate School application fee. Applicants must apply on Oct. 12 to take advantage of this waiver.

TAMIU Commencement Kick-Of Happening Thursday, Oct. 12

Our Fall 2023 Commencement Kick-Off is happening Thursday, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. in the Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center. Join us to check your graduation status, purchase regalia, order your class ring and receive loan payment information.

TAMIU's Reading the Globe Lecture by Marie Mutsuki Mockett this Friday, Oct. 13

TAMIU's Reading the Globe Program will host a lecture on Friday, Oct. 13 at noon in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall. The special lecture features this year's Fall 2023 Campus Common Read author Marie Mutsuki Mockett. Her novel, Where the Dead Pause, and the Japanese Say Goodbye, was the Fall Campus Common Read for TAMIU First-Year Students. Students can apply for selection as an RTG Ambassadors by taking part in an essay competition for their chance to participate in a study abroad trip to Japan this Spring 2024.

TAMIU Hosts Partial Solar Eclipse Watch Party Saturday, Oct. 14

As individuals across the country prepare for the upcoming partial solar eclipse, TAMIU will host a watch party on Saturday, Oct. 14 on the front lawn of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library. The free watch party begins at 10:15 a.m. and ends at 1:35 p.m. Admission to the event is free and open to the community.

TAMIU Athletics Update

TAMIU is a member of the Lone Star Conference and competes in 11 sports: volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, softball, baseball, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's golf.
