My process for Burningman is similar each year. I start to get ideas during the actual festival. I love to see how other artists and engineers construct their final project. Then when the art theme is announced, I hone in on an idea and see if it's realistic to build and move. It's one thing to build an entire structure in it's place, but it's a different kind of challenge to build it to be taken apart, transported, then reconstructed.
For this years project, I landed on an Alpaca. I know I wanted to construct something from blocks, I just didn't know what. The Alpaca gave me the opportunity to use blocks as a reflective surface to showcase LED's in a dark place. The tech was simple, but the build had to be precise. Each panel was created to house a certain length of LED so the programming would look clean on the Alpaca. I used a WS2812B LED controller and LED (SMD5050 RGB) strips. I run power the same way each year. Solar panels to charge 12V Batteries that power an inverter.
