The Giving Me In what ways does volunteering benefit not only the good of the greater community but the giver themselves?

Students will travel to a different location each day, giving their time and effort to assist in serving the needs of the charitable and/or non-profit organization.

DAY 1

Today, on our first day of Project Week, we went to the New Hampshire Food Bank in Manchester. First we had a tour of their facilities and they talked to us about some general information and facts about the Food Bank. The NH Food Bank supplied recipients with 16 million pounds of food last year and is the only food bank in the state of New Hampshire. Today they had us helping in the kitchen, peeling potatoes and cutting up meat, dicing peppers and assembling whole trays of food for destinations like the Girls and Boys Clubs, homeless shelters, half-way houses, after-school programs, and many others.

DAY 2

Today was our second day of Project Week. We went to the Seacoast Science Center in Rye, NH. In the morning, we had a short lesson on climate change and the threats of changing storm patterns on coastal communities. Then, we went outside to clear hundreds of rocks on the property that had been washed up by high tides and a strong storm. The property is a venue for weddings so our work went into making the property clean and presentable. In the afternoon, we went to a nearby beach and picked up litter along the shoreline, such as glass bottles, styrofoam, a tire, a shoe, and various plastic waste.

DAY 3

Today was our third day of Project Week. We first went to the Whole Village Family Resource Center in Plymouth, NH and then to the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton. At Whole Village, we filled maternity gift bags with important items like changing pads and infant clothes for new moms in need. We learned that the Center is a non-profit organization where donations provide social services, support, and resources for families in Plymouth and 18 surrounding towns. We then went to the NH Veterans Home where we helped transport the veterans from their rooms to a large gathering space and enjoyed the performance of a musical guest with them.

DAY 4

Today was our fourth day of Project Week. In the morning we arrived at Paul Smith Elementary School in Franklin, NH to run two PE gym classes for 1st and 2nd Grade students. We rotated them through individual sports stations including basketball, baseball, soccer, and football. Then, after lunch in Concord, we went back to the school and read to kindergarten students individually during their library class. We finished the day helping the librarian by placing barcodes on books that were missing them.

DAY 5

On the final day of our Project Week, our group engaged in various acts of service in Manchester, New Hampshire. We started our day at the Make-A-Wish Foundation warehouse facility, where we enthusiastically organized donated toys for families noting their value and fixing any damaged packaging. Immersing ourselves in the Foundation’s cause, we listened to a heartwarming story about a teenage boy who survived cancer. Following a lunch break, we shifted our focus to the Waypoint Youth Resource Center dedicated to assisting homeless youth in New Hampshire. There we learned about the challenges these young individuals face experiencing homelessness. We helped organize a food pantry and clothing donations to support the Center’s mission. These resources will later be given out to these young individuals in need. The day marked the culmination of our dedication to making an impact and leaving a lasting impression on others while deepening our understanding of compassion and community service.
