Playing and Learning nURSERY, auTUMN tERM, wEEK 9

We love books. Our focus story this week is 'Supertato' by Sue Hendra, its packed full of dramatic action and new vocabulary. Mrs Ranson helped us practise our oracy skills using counters to help us take turns when talking.

Talking about our favourite superheroes.

We've been exploring the books in the school library and learning how to choose a book that looks interesting, appropriate, and most of all entertaining.

Handling our books with care and respect.

In maths we used the Supertato theme to compare different vegetables. Some that looked big had less mass than the smaller denser vegetables! You can help at home by using the words 'heavy' and 'light' as we will continue this focus next week.

Using the balance scales
Having a feel and using the words 'heavier' and 'lighter'.

We enjoyed a wide range of sensory play this week. This is super important to fire up all the neurones in our brains for our development.

A wide range of materials for creative and sensory exploration.
Cool damp sand for sculpting.
Wet and dry spaghetti.
Rice to pour and scoop.
Hard and squishy pumpkins for both gross and fine motor development.

Every day we take part in physical development activities. This week we have had the bikes, dough disco, cutting, sticking, threading, and peg boards just to name a few.

Drawing at the writing table.
A tricky fine motor shape activity.
Building imaginary worlds with the trains.
Creative play in our job shop.

Lastly, I just wanted to share the care that the children are showing towards our plants in the classroom. These girls made links to our learning last half term and were asking questions about looking after the baby plants coming off the mother spider plant. Perhaps we have our own nature superheroes in nursery!
